I want to thank you all for your input, but I think I'm going to order the Aero ANJ4. While I think the Irvin looks amazing, the lack of pockets will drive me crazy. At a minimum, I need to put my gloves somewhere!
Now, since Aero has 2 different sheepskin colors: USAAF Redskin and USAAF...
That is reassuring. I'm not used to the sheepskin, I'm used to the heavy cow and a #5 zipper would get eaten alive on those. I'm going to stop agonizing, and trust the WWII patterns, after all they survived bomber raids in harsh conditions.
I was not aware about the Simmons Bilt pattern theft. I'm sure the stories are flying around the forum. No wonder that Polaris jacket looks so good, its really an Aero!!!
I must say that @MrProper's Aero CC fits really well, so while it looks "original" a few alterations actually enhance the enjoyment.
I wouldn't go putting pockets on it since that would really change the jacket but it would make it very practical. However, I tried to get Aero to put a bigger...
Agreed, the sheepskin jackets fit completely different. I definitely wan't clear with my thoughts, but what I meant to say was that once I know my "sheepskin" size, I could confidently order off the rack (or custom) from 5* or other manufacturers.
Just as a note, I took my measurements in a...
Carrie from Thurston Bros. is actually sending me a B6 as the try-on jacket. If it's the one on the website, it's the redskin sheepskin. That thing might not make it back to them after the test :)
Once I get to know my size in sheepskin, 5* would be a future option. From reading the extensive thread, you must be very precise with them. @MrProper has a document where he lays out all the instructions (which I will shamelessly steal!!).
Also the second you change anything on the 5* jacket...
Thank you for the suggestion on the sheepskin cuffs. I think I've seen them in old pictures with that feature. I will ask for it, since it's not really changing the military spec of the jacket.
You sir are the one that lit the fire on my Irvin quest. You rock that jacket like a supermodel !! In fact, I used your pictures (all your shearlings) to convince the Boss that I COULD look like that in an Irvin jacket. She calls you the tall, handsome gentleman, and I thank you!
Just for completeness, I also considered the B3 but ruled it out after talking to a few manufacturers and all of them warned me that even in the Northeast, that is a beast of a jacket.
I did look at the AN-J-4 from Lost Worlds. It looks like a beautifully made jacket, top notch, but the price...
John, you are an authority in these jackets, and your advice is most welcome. So please go on and on...
I didn't think the cuffs on the ANJ4 would irritate the hand more that a regular jacket with storm cuffs. But I'm guessing the sleeves are longer that a regular jacket.
Yeah, the side...
I love the Coastal Command Irvin. Too many choices, and I've been warned that I will be shot between the eyes with a large caliber pistol if I event think about getting another shearling.
Aero would not make changes to these jackets when I talked to them. Even Carrie told me that it would be an uphill battle. I could go with a different maker, but Aero makes a good Irvin, and Eastman is $$$$$, and I could only push the "Boss" so far, money wise.
I'm finally taking the plunge on a shearling jacket. I've always wanted one and finally got permission from the "Boss" to purchase ONE. I guess I wore her down to the ground, because she told me that if she agrees, then I have to stop talking about it. (no chance, but I agreed with my fingers...
Thanks, I definitely missed it !! Must be the 60 hour weeks I was putting in at the time. My CHP is about 1 year old and it looks and feels new despite wearing the sh**t out of it. I've even gone in the rain with it. Nothing, still new looking. I think I need some more "harsh" treatment.
@ton312, I apologize if I missed the pictures, but would you mind posting how your de-plasticized jacket looks? I'm contemplating giving the CHP the same treatment. Thanks.
