One of my favorite Stetsons..... Kind of a mystery hat with the unusual "USA" sweatband embossing. Ive seen a couple of these embossings, but never learned what they were all about. Logo on liner is a bit different to my eye. Cellophane cover on the liner so it cant be too old. Ive always guessed late 50's. If anyone knows more... Im all ears

I played with the contrast a little bit but have been unable to figure out the “critter” feature. The eyes & nose are obvious. Do you think it has wings? Or are those leaves of greenery?

An owl with wings spread standing on a log? Not your standard Stetson imagery. Maybe a retailer logo?

Thank you Stefan. Enjoying your hat parade this week. For me the Morreton and Barbisio Titan knocking it out the park!

Not sure ... could be palm leaves or bat wings lol..Almost reminds me of a Bacardi rum logo. Im wondering if it was a "store" hat. I HAVE seen that embossing before, but evidently no one knows anything about it.... lots of gold leaf on this one. This one came out of Germantown, Pa so I dont think its a foreign market hat.... The crest on the rondell also has me confused.. have never seen a sunburst shape in the upper left of the crest... usually its stars, stripes or maple leaves..... I enjoy a good mystery

Ive definitely got the only one like it around here

William (WM) Spath - Hand Made
“Styles of To-Morrow”
5 1/2 Crown Open (approx 4 1/2 as shaped)
2 1/2 brim with 3/8 bound edge
1 1/2 black grosgrain ribbon
Unreeded sweatband.

This latest arrival caught my eye with a few production elements that looked a bit older, including the unreeded sweatband, taped unstitched rear seam and small black circular size tag. However in hand we find a thin clear crinkly liner tip which points to at least later 1940s. The hat was being sold with a Stephen L Stetson hat box that didn’t in my opinion appear to have any relation to the hat. Due to the condition and extremely high shipping cost for the box, I was able to work out a deal with the seller to ship only that hat. My original thought was this was a store brand private label hat and that WM Spath may have been a men’s store in Philadelphia. However the manufacturing elements do not appear to match any of the usual suspects for private label manufacturers of the era. There is not any manufacturer’s labels under the sweat… at least not what I could find as I did have to be very careful with this old reeded sweatband. I will say the Hand Made impression on the sweat is reminiscent of one I saw on a MacLachlan made private label hat. But again no other tell tale signs of maker. The 1854 E Allegheny Ave, Philadelphia PA address points a a fairly small likely retail storefront. Maybe a bit of @DaveProc detective work may yield some more information, but I am leaning to William Spath being an independent hatter in Philly, who maybe did some finishing work on his own hats, from hat bodies he purchased from a felt supplier… similar to the cottage hatting industry that is growing today. It might explain manufacturing elements that span a few decades all on one hat. A smaller hatter may not make the sweeping changes that a larger private label manufacturing block may make.

Whatever the case, whoever did make this hat knew what they were doing! It’s is a very fine and well made hat, designed in the 5 1/2 crown, 2 1/2 brim with 3/8 bound edge and 1 1/2 ribbon “whippet like” styling that was becoming popular late 1940s into 1950s. A few tiny surface level moth nips on the slightly velvety nap, but nothing too significant. I had thought it was going to need a good steaming back into shape, but what you see here is after just a good brushing, some sun and a hand shaping. As might have been expected with the unreeded… the hat was a bit snug when first putting on, but with wear it’s settling in and fitting quite nicely. I’m happy to own this interesting little piece from WM Spath “Styles of To-Morrow”.

Given the excessive heat we've been experiencing in Italy this year, it'll be a while before I speak or wear a felt hat. Here Stefan, the combination is perfect for my taste. A top-notch jacket and shirt.
The restaurant can wait for a slight drop in temperatures. :)
Thank you, gentlemen. Cooler weather coming, so time for felts again.

Good day hat folks. This mornings dog soirée was enjoyed under the brim of a Gannon Beachcomer (ivory beaver felt). This hat was inspired by the Stetson Beachcomer fedora.

Has anyone documented another Lee Blue Label marked “ Station Wagon” or does anyone have a Lee catalog/price list or Wallachs advertisement showing this model?
