I used a few dabs of micron sized superglue to strengthen any flaking as you so accurately described. Turned out great so far, but let's see how it works this fall.
I tried this, wrecked a beautiful vanson Enfields zipper, I have 30yr old schotts that don't have this issue, you shouldn't have to doctor a new jacket to stop this happening. I now use fabric glue and sail tape on every vanson I own.

Fabric glue and sale tape? Ayeee. Thank you. Hopefully successful with my vanson comet size 44 — coming up when I try using it out this fall. And I 100% agree. My new to me vanson police jacket is missing teeth and pins on its saltwater proof factory zipper.

Do you encapsulate the plastic parts with fabric glue or sail tape?
I've used fabric glue for thinning interior liner on a Levi's made and crafted cafe racer, works to keep it from fading away (friction).

I now cut a thin strip of sail tape and insert it onto the tape at the insertion pin,wee bit of fabric glue and clamp my leatherman wave needle nose pliers with mole grips overnight, works a treat.ive had new vanson jackets fray after a couple of zip uses, not good.

You got to make a video or something. It's too cool to imagine!

This must be the scariest jacket on the FL. It is generating so much interest but everyone's afraid of the length.

What I told the other person, while I always preferred cropped jackets, I understand how intimidating it must be to suddenly switch to one that is significantly shorter than what you're used to but I can promise you, once you get used to it which should take about three days as you realize nobody pays attention to what you wear, back length measurement will disappear from your list of determining factors.

And even so, a Horsehide Vanson should stand out. Otherwise, it's just another Vanson. Which it is.

Even still, I just want the jacket so bad. I missed it. But prior to whole thread I did find a remarkable deal on a 44 Vanson Comet competition hide.

Yes, shorter jackets were the norm throughout the 20th century simply because they look more flattering on a person (apart from their functionality). It's all about proportions. Even long car coats had a belt where a shorter jacket would end, so the proportions would be there.

I can't understand why it took so long until somebody bought this great jacket at this great price. If I did not already own one I would have jumped on it immediatly!
Congratulations for the new owner!
I think the length is no problem at all!

Is this also horsehide?

Seems like some of the standard cow versions are more like 23 inches. But I may live to regret not jumping on this one when I had the chance!

This is not Horween horsehide—it’s leather from Vanson’s own tannery. They have only produced horsehide jackets twice in total. The first run used far thicker hide, but customers complained it was overly bulky. For the second batch, they made a thinner iteration of their horsehide; this version is almost too thin.
