Hello Fedora Fans,

I will be making another fedora using a FEPSA buckskin color 120G weight 100% pure rabbit, I have decided on the color and I am thinking of 5.5" open crown with a single crease, 3" wide brim with binding, matching hat band and brim binding, coffee brown. I am having trouble with the hat size.
Does anyone have a suggestion?

Have a Great weekend,
Darrell

Those proportions are going to look incredibly well-balanced on a larger head. Have you considered blocking it as a 7 3/8? Thinking for guys with bigger frames looking for a bold, classic shape. It will look great on them without feeling overwhelming.

Hi CJ,

I have thought about sizes from 7 1/4" up to 7 1/2", I just can't decide on a size for this FEPSA rabbit. A 7 1/2" would be a good size, the felt is 120G weight, with matching hat band and brim binding , I am also thinking about a coffee color leather sweatband for the hat.
I will wait to see if I get some more suggestions on the size & color combonations .

Thank you for your time and help,
Darrell

Hello Fedora Fans,

I have been really busy lately, I have a customer out west that wants 2 different FEPSA beaver fur felt hats, the first hat that I am working on is a whiskey color, a really sharpe color for a hat, here is a little run down on the first hat.
The Whiskey color FEPSA beaver is going to have a teardrop crown shape, rattlesnake hat band that I am making, I started out with the rattlesnake skin, tacked it to a board and I glued a light weight piece of leather to the skin, the hat will have a oval shaped silver concho, horsehair hat band and a turkey feather, 3" wide brim, waterfall brim front and back with the sides slightly turned up, the teardrop crown height front 4 1/2" & 4 1/4" back with a small mule kick in the front, white satin hat liner coffee color sweatband. Leather braided Stamped cinches in brown. Hat size 7 3/8".
I searched for a week to find everything that I need for this hat.
When I am finished I will post photos of the whiskey color hat, the second FEPSA beaver will be Penn Steele with black gator hat band, another hat band that I will be making from start to finish, I will have to dye it USMC Black, oval shaped concho, crown shape will be a cattle baron, the brim shape the same as the whiskey color.
I will post photos as I finish it hat and I plan to take photos of each step along the way, providing I remember to do so.
Ther are more steps to making a rattlesnake hat band than just gluing the tanned skin to a piece of leather.

Have a Great Weekend,
Darrell

Thank you Sir. I really appreciate the feed back on the hats that I make. I am always looking for ways to improve my work. There is always a way to improve the work or something new to learn. Learning how to make the bow on this fedora was a test for me, getting the folds right and the length of ribbon needed for the bow.
Love the bow on this hat!!

Looking forward to seeing how that whiskey beaver build comes together, Darrell! The rattlesnake band on the other hat sounds like a serious undertaking, but, definitely a fun change of pace from the Penn Steele we have been sketching. Keep up the great work!

The rattlesnake hat band is a challenge for sure, as of right now I have the skin glued down to a piece of lite weight leather that has a lot of flex to it, I had to purchase some Bickmore spray for Exoctic animal skins, the glue that I am using is Barge Cement normally used for leather shoe repair, once it is setup you have to use a very sharp blade to seperate the pieces glued together. The Bickmore is a cleaner and a sealer, so the scales stay in place. The fun will be sewing it to the hat body, & getting the hat band to lay on the crown properly. I will sew the ends together and cover the seam with a silver concho oval shaped. Maybe by Monday I will be ready to shape and attach the hat band.

I found a YouTube video of a man making a rattlesnake skin hat band, he used belt weight leather, used the Barge Cement but he sprayed the snake skin with a layer of clear coat paint, that should protect the hat band against fading. My question is, will the clear coat crack??

Hello Fedora Fans,

The brim width on this hat is 3 1/4" the crown height is 4.5" front and 4.25" back 4.75" on the sides. I was trying to make a hat that would fit your head and not touch the top of your head when you wear it.
The rattlesnake hat band is 1.5" wide, the braided horsehair hat band Black & Brown color is 1/2" wide, the silver concho is oval shape, 1 5/8" wide 2" long, a white satin hat liner, the leather sweatband is a coffee color 2" wide., the stampede cinches are brown color. The crown is a teardrop shape, with deep dents in the front of the crown, Raiders style, plus a small mule kick in the front.

I put a lot of time into finding the rattlesnake skin and the light weight pig skin to make the hat band, plus locating the stampede cinches, turkey feathers and the conchos.

I will be starting on the Penn Steele next, I have been working on the gator hat band & the leather sweatband. I will be cutting the brim to the same width as the whiskey color, my customer wants a low crown however when I shape the crown I need to make sure that the crease won't touch the top of the head when it is worn, lucky for me I wear a hat size 7 3/8", so I can test the fit.

Shipping the hat will be a bear because a lot can happen to the turkey feather during shipping.

I didn't expect the government controls on the alligator skin and to have such a tuff time finding the materials needed for the hats that I am making.

Here is a few photos for you to look at, let me know what you think?
Still having trouble making good photos.

Thank you for your time and help,
Darrell

I like how you layered the snakeskin with the horsehair, for some different texture and look. Also the mule kick, breaks up the front and keeps it from looking like every other Indiana hat.

Thank you, I really appreciate all of the input, this hat was my customer's design, we stayed in contact and he would ask me for a change somewhere during the build, the rattlesnake hat band was something new for me, I made the hat band totally by hand, I picked up a lot of information about making a hat band using snake skin, a real learning experience. Shipping this hat is going to be another challenge considering that the hat has a feather in the hat band, so the hat will be shipped with a lot of packing material, a lot of bubble wrap. I will be shipping this hat out Monday.
My customers next hat is also a FEPSA beaver in Penn Steele will have an alligator hat band, modified open road style with a wide brim shaped like this whiskey color hat, with black Stampede Cinches, silver concho oval shape. Still waiting to hear what additions he wants on this hat.

I don't know whay the ****** Hats is listed as ****** Hat, however if the title is changed to the website address, the Asterisk will change.

Does anyone else have the same problem with the listings of the hats that they make?

I have The Fedora Lounge listed on every letter that I send to customers, Instagram, FB, the asterisk makes it hard to find my listings on The Fedora Lounge.

My gues is the first name for my hats, ******, B U S T E D , the system is reading it as a conversation about something else. Maybe I should have gone with The Bluegrass Hat Company??

Yeah it is getting a bit silly with the auto censoring.

A note to the Moderation Team:

I am not sure if this is the software used for the forum, but have you tried following these steps to remove the censoring?:

If these default words aren't showing, have you tried adding one of the affected words to the list and then adding the same word in the replacement field to try and counteract the built-in list?

Geesh .... The censoring is getting extreme:
It is going to far, I just discovered that the listings on Google have changed, it seems that the computer systems have a problem with the first part of the name so lets see what happens with this bustedhats company. It appears that the web search engines have a problem with ******, b u s t e d.

I haven't tried that yet, however Google is doing the same thing, if you run a search like bustedhats there isn't a problem, but if you put a space between ****** & hats that is when the listing doesn't show up. Fixing the problem here might work, however how do you fix that with the rest of the other search engines, some of the listings listed with ****** has to do with arrest. just peachy!!!

Google doesn't seem to have any issues for me. I think this is a forum specific issue that the system admin for Fedora Lounge would need to look into:

I use to able to enter ****** hats in the Google search bar and a half a page or more was listed on the first page all with links to my website, Instagram page, FB , Ebay, there still is a lot information displayed but it is small photos of hats, if you click on one you get a Ebay page with ad.
However the biggest problem is with The Lounge system. I bet that it doesn't display b u s t e d in the first sentence.
I was right you see asterisk in place of the name.

The whiskey beaver came together with a ton of great character. The rattlesnake band and braided horsehair combination gives it a distinct look. Navigating all those sourcing and regulation headaches for the materials sounds like even more reason to appreciate your personal attention and skilled craftsmanship —keep up the great work!
