What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

Does anyone know if there’s a general sunglasses forum on here somewhere?

I’ve found a small number of specific threads, but nothing comprehensive like if we wanted to learn about sunnies the way we have about hats, or a WSAYWT that I can find.

They have been the new object of my collecting gene recently.
Hi Jeff. In order to keep this thread on target I should probably answer you in a PM. I’ll try & do that later today.

Had trouble posting pictures yesterday. Let's see if today is any better. It's not Sunday anymore, but still the hats of last week.

The Alessandria, it just defines elegance. Having trouble logging on Stefan? I have given up.

Herbert Johnson - Soft Bowler
Warm Grey Felt
4 1/2 Soft Round Crown
d'Orsay Curl Brim 1 7/8 front/back 1 1/2 Sides
1 inch charcoal grosgrain ribbon

As our friend/lounge alumni Brent has said.. “sometime a hat just speaks to me” That was certainly the case with this Herbert Johnson soft bowler. It caught my attention with its warm toned grey felt and darker charcoal binding on its d'Orsay Curl Brim. Based on its pictures I was kinda envisioning a bit more of a soft homburg kinda crown but in person it is in fact a bowler shaped crown but still soft and shapeable. I imagine at a time when soft felts were becoming more and more popular while stiff felts/bowlers were still a bit of a standard especially in the British market this Soft Bowler made for a bit of a crossover. That said.. I’m quite pleased with it for two reasons… first it finally checks off the box of grey bowler. Second… the Soft Bowler designation makes it quite an interesting piece, an example of which I had not come across previously. And it’s a Herbert Johnson to boot. I’m no expert on dating HJ hats but the 38 New Bond Street puts it squarely in the rather broad range of 1895 and 1975. The notation on the liner By Appointment to Her Royal Majesty The Queen Royal Hatters puts us about 1953 or later. It certainly looks like the quality of hats we often see from the 1950s so that would be my guess. If you’ve ever had the urge to reach up and squeeze a pinch in the front of a bowler… this is the hat for you!

THAT is a tremendous score, Joe!!! All kinds of interesting, stylish, and unique!!! Kudos!!!

Borchert Berlin W., back of sweatband stamped August 6, 1952. Worn "Camber" style Brim Up. Could have been made by Rehfus & Cie. (Kehl a. Rhein) after factory reopened in 1951. Also the Borchert Berlin W. store location changed after WWII because the original location was in the Soviet sector. Found this Soft Felt back in 2011

This is retail store that had a house brand. According to this 1913 ad Rehfus & Cie (Kehl a. Rhein) made hats under the Borchert Marke. I have no idea if they were the only supplier and how long the relationship latest with Borchert.

J. Hückel´s Söhne Wien "Eureka - Plume", possibly late 1890s early 1900s. This is only "Eureka" model I of come across and it's possibly the oldest JHS Hat I have that is my size. The Form of this Stiff Felt is really great. The black Liner and gold embossing is especially striking. Same with the stylized "Eureka" on the sweatband. I found this Stiff Felt back in 2017.

Oh, I love that one Blare! Bowlers might be my favorite style (maybe, depends on the day). I haven't come across a soft bowler. It's beautiful and looks great on you.

Starting to warm up here in East Texas... The Pecan trees are finally blooming out, the hummingbirds are back, and ill soon be mowing every 4 or 5 days. Figured some of the heavier hats needed some air time before they get put up for the hot weather. ( Time for Straws and Hemp hats coming soon)

Today is a fairly nice Orvis furfelt. Fairly substantial and soft hat. Essentially brand new. Has a made in USA tag but havent found any evidence of who actually made it. it was one of those cheap 2am ebay hats that evidently everyone else failed to notice lol

Hello fellow hat lovers!

My last five days were spent on a 2000 mile drive from Wisconsin to Portland, OR.

I've made this trip in a semi (or one like it or even longer) at least a dozen times, but this one was particularly challenging. The weather was argumentative the entire way, I missed out on some of my favorite views, I lost an entire day to trailer repairs, flatbed driving requires much more delicacy than dry van operation, etc.

But the load of tiles was delivered this morning and I have two days off!! Woohoo!

I plan to don the Northwest Hats and head out exploring tomorrow, but today still finds me under the brim of the FED IV, which has proven to be a wonderful working hat (not that I needed any such proof, but I have put this lid through the ringer the last ten days and it has shrugged off every hardship and been a really wonderful companion, to boot).

I am including a photo of an interesting information board in the truck stop where I am parked.

My best regards to all!
