Etsuko purchased this over the lower priced 10yo. However, I have the feeling that the 10 was cheaper because it was on sale. Never mind, it’s a very pleasant drop, though not as punchy as I remember the 10 being. It has been years since I’ve had a Laphroig, so I could be mistaken. Anyway, looking for a bit more punch, we’ve just ordered the Quarter Cask.

No hat today because (late to the party as usual) I’m just coming off my first bout of COVID, but temperature is back to normal, so I figure I’m good for a drink. No photo, but I started with the Wild Turkey 8yo 101. It was underwhelming.

At least you are taking the good meds -- Keep us informed on the quarter cask! (AND get well quickly)

Thanks, guys. I’m feeling close to a hundred now. Rules don’t allow me to return to work until Wednesday, though, so more whisky may be on the horizon for the next evening or two.

Thanks, Jack. I did enjoy the Oak Select last night, so really looking forward to the Quarter Cask. It cost about $US40. I’m guessing that’s pretty cheap compared to the US. The Oak Select was about $US30.
Been a while since I’ve bought any Laphroaig so I just looked them up from a couple of my suppliers:

Quarter Cask $67.99

10 yr Old $65.99

Select $56.98 (no oak select)

Triple Wood $65.98

Triple Wood Islay $91.98

Lore $114.99

In that case, I’ll pour myself a couple (even though, given the time difference, it was most likely yesterday) Started with a Highland Park 12 Vikings Honour…one I’m not enamoured with, but then moved on to a Bunnahabhain 12. The Bunnahabhain, I really enjoy.

Akubra Stylemaster for a quick (fully masked) dash to the supermarket to pick up essentials for our quarantine-like existence.

Fortunately, despite the weak yen, even imported essentials (food and whisky) are still relatively cheap here. I’ve heard the Lore is very Polarising. I’d love to try it, but I struggle to justify anything more expensive than the Lagavulin 16.

Expensive for swimming pool water.

There are a couple of good whisky bars here. One has what he calls the medicine cabinet & you have to ask to see that list. When I come on to something top shelf that I’m interested in I usually buy a double shot from the medicine cabinet to see if I like it, before paying $115 for a bottle & not know.

Well this was a shock. After being altogether underwhelmed by the 8yo Wild Turkey 101 a couple of nights ago, I decided to give it another crack. This time I put it in a Glencairn rather than a NEAT glass. I don’t usually notice a huge difference between the two glasses, but Etsuko prefers the NEAT, so I’m happy to go along with her. But in this case, the 8yo 101 is a totally different beast in the Glencairn. The nose is softer, sweeter and more complex. Same on the palette, with the spices, caramel , vanilla and cereal coming through. Suddenly, this is a really enjoyable whiskey.

Today’s hat was a Barbisiothat came to me via Stefan.

turkey 101 to my uncivilized pallate has always seemed to punch way above its pricepoint. It and Evan Williams 100 Bottled in Bond are my two favorite "affordible" bourbons

In keeping with the thread title, this is where my bespoke hats originate:

Never have I experienced a retail encounter so splendidly British as purchasing a finely crafted fedora from Gamble & Gu-nn. Perched within a charmingly atmospheric local pub, one can peruse impeccably styled hats, and caps whilst enjoying a pint of beer. It is a brilliant, truly civilized marriage of tailored headwear and hearty ale. I went in for a stylish fedora and came out feeling like an 1920's gentleman, slightly tipsy, and impeccably dressed. What an experience!

Gamble & Gu-nn’s retail store and showroom, selling current stock alongside their collection of vintage hats, accessories and curios is open to the public. The store is located in the heart of the Devon countryside in their 16th Century Pub.

The shop is also open in the evenings Thursday to Saturday from 7pm when the pub opens its doors. However it's advisable to call to make an appointment, to ensure that the shop is open, especially if you are making a long journey.

The Stetson Custom V has been looking after my head for the last couple of days. First with a coffee to get me through the last part of a long drive…
IMG_2066.jpeg

Later it was beer and Riku whisky in the free drink time at the hotel.
IMG_5671.jpeg
and finally trying the Bruichladdich Islay Barley back at home.
