Adding brown patina to black boots.

Do any of you do this ?
I've been wearing my BATES ICW boots a bunch riding my minibike lately, but it's getting too muddy so I've taken a break from that and figured it was time to clean them up.
After I got all the mud off and everything I noticed all the scuffing and the fading of the black color in these areas, it's the kind of chrome tanned leather that becomes a bluish greyish color when the top grain wears.
Well I decided to see if I could create a faux teacore kind of patina by adding some brown color to these areas.
Brown Saphir or something would probably be the best choice, but I've just got some leather dye on hand so that's what I used.
They're just beaters, but as a proof of concept I think it looks pretty good so far and I think I'll probably continue with this practice as they age.

With shipping I payed I think $30-ish for these NOS surplus last year, so I really have nothing to loose.
They'll continue to do their job as cold / wet weather beater boots regardless, but just may end up actually looking good.

I'll bet somebody could replicate this themselves in just a few minutes with some 220 grit ( maybe something finer ? ) paper and brown colored treatment of their choosing.
I'm not sure about sanding leather though.
