1950s Sears D-Pocket — Restoration + Break-In Journey (New Member Introduction)

Hi folks,

I’ve recently moved to Canada, and as a vintage collector from Korea, I wanted to dive into a bigger world and finally join this legendary community.

This is my first post here, so thank you in advance I’m glad to meet you all.

I’d like to share my most recent find:

1950s Sears “Cycle Champ”type D-pocket leather jacket

IMG_0047.jpeg

I picked this one up on Facebook Marketplace here in Toronto for a surprisingly good price.

The condition was remarkable — essentially no break-in yet, with only natural sleeve creasing from age.

When I inspected the back panel, I realised the wear revealed tea-core horsehide underneath… which absolutely amazed me.

That said, the jacket arrived with quite a bit of mould and a musty smell.

So on day one, I wiped it down thoroughly with a 1:10 vinegar–water solution, let it dry overnight, and the next morning applied Leather Honey to revive the dry surface.

Since then, I’ve been wearing it every single day for four days straight — even in Toronto’s freezing weather — letting the hide warm up and mould to my body.

The way the sleeves have started to crease to my natural arm shape has been incredibly satisfying.

This jacket is something I genuinely hope to wear for decades, perhaps until the end of my life — watching the horsehide evolve, darken, and develop its own story with me.

Thank you for having me here.

Looking forward to learning from you all and sharing the journey.

How did you decide specifically on Leather Honey?

For older jackets, I've frequently used Pecard Antique Leather Dressing, and just got some Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP.

Seems like Leather Honey conditions, but leaves a more matte appearance. Was that part of the calculus?

I went with Leather Honey mainly because I wanted a conditioner that penetrates well without leaving a waxy surface layer.

Pecard and Obenauf’s are great products, but on older jackets they can darken the hide more than I prefer.

Leather Honey keeps things soft while leaving a more matte, natural appearance

Dig it. Thanks for the intel!

I have a buddy at work that uses Leather Honey on his duty boots, so I figured that was the case.

Enjoy your find! Seems like a sweet jacket.

Glad to hear that!

@Vintagecollectkr welcome to the circus, you scored a cool piece. I too live in Toronto, whereabouts are you? If you're ever interested in getting a coffee and talking leather jackets let me know - I've found a couple of amazing spots and would be happy to introduce you to them. Take care and hang in there - this weather is bananas.

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the warm welcome.

I’m in downtown Toronto near Union Station

A coffee and some leather talk sounds great, actually.

Feel free to DM me anytime. And yes… this weather is absolutely wild
