Speaking of Tonak, here's a light blue-ish hat with the labels.

This was listed on Goodwill as "1950 Tibet Velour", along with some bad pics. Wondering if it might be an autocorrected Thibet, I threw out a last minute bid and won it. Turns out not French, but Czech.

Here's where the description on the listing came from...

And a head shot. It's just a bit loose...

The crown is a scant 5 inches high, the brim is 2 3/4 inches. No lightweight at 170 grams. The swearband has the kind of fake-y feelling like reconstituted, although it could be the processing. The velour is nothing like vintage, but still nice and plush with a very pettable hand. Very well made, with a stitched in liner. I'm guessing this was one of the nicer offerings for it's time.
I am assuming it was made by Tonak.

I got this Tonak from an eBay purchase today. Although it was advertised as 1940's vintage fur, I bought it knowing that was not the case. If anyone could help me identify the era (and honestly the material) of the hat, I would be most appreciative. I thought it would be rabbit fur, but upon seeing it, I thought perhaps wool, now I am thinking maybe beaver? I am not sure if Tonak used (or uses) either of those in its hat productions. I guess some research is in order.

Jeff, Tonak uses rabbit or wild hare but could be wool or has filler. It's most likely just over stiffened. Has to be post 1990 because of "Made in Czech Republic". My guess would be 1990s.

Thanks for that info. I think I noticed the "Czech Republic" when I bought it, which is why I didn't believe it was the vintage it was advertised as. Truly, it was the feel of the felt that was most perplexing.

After giving it some thought, I decided to return it for a refund with a lengthy explanation of the issues I had with it. If anyone else sees this pop up, hopefully the seller will have corrected the errors.

Now it's time to look at and examine the remade and/or remodeled hats I've recently purchased.
Toank Blu 6.jpg

They're often quite easy to decipher, but some are complete enigmas. This one is the case today.
Toank Blu 3.jpg
The red lining has a faded Tonak logo, as does the sweatband.

Toank Blu marchio Tonak.jpg
The size listed is 58, but in reality the internal measurements are those of a size 56/57 hat, depending on the fit.
Toank Blu 5.jpg
The felt is very interesting, very dense and thick, and its finishing touches, which I assume were added after its creation, or were left in during the remaking.
Toank Blu 7.jpg

The felt appears to be a midnight blue, and the ribbons that trim it are slightly lighter. I find the combination beautiful.
The external measurements are as follows: brim at 6.5 cm, ribbon is 2,5 cm and the lowest point of the crown is 10.5 cm.
Toank Blu 8.jpg
The internal measurements are: 19x16.5 centimeters
Toank Blu 9.jpg
I bought it with the clear intention of being able to wear it after some work to adjust it to my size. That's not possible, it's too small to fit, so if anyone is interested, let me know.
