No doubt Akubra make great hats. The Fed is a great blank canvas for 1930s style recreation.

Now a rather different Aussie hat made from kangaroo leather. A Jacaru. View attachment 690762

Your Jacaru intrigued me, not a hat, nor even a word that I have previously come across. Looking it up I find:

It is tough, made to withstand rough treatment, yet designed to look elegant whatever the occasion. Made from full grain, water repellent Kangaroo leather. You can expect it to provide excellent protection from the harsh Australian sun and the soaking rains of the wet season.

What a treasure of information you can find here on The Lounge. I'm reminded of a cap in leather, horsehide leather, horsehide being the leather of choice for expensive shoes. It took some searching but I have finally found it. Here you go, not exactly kangaroo leather but horses have known to be good jumpers. I've lost a shekel or two betting on that!

Certainly a fine choice as a keeper. One question. Is that Knox wind cord button on an actual functional wind cord it is it on an elastic loop?

Hi Joe,

Yes, this is the typical wind cord construction with a button at the end of an elastic cord attached to the crown. I have a number of hats (mostly Stetson c.1939-40) that used a fixed button sewn to the hat and a cord with a looped end that would seemingly be looped around a lapel button rather than through a button hole. In the latter design, the loop hooks around the sewn on button to keep it stowed nicely and gives the same overall look when wound around the crown.

I've always wondered if there was much if any actual use of a wind cord as a functional hat seat belt or if it was a design affectation much like the faux lacing and ribbon flourish on sweatbands. I don't think I've ever seen one in use in photography or film, or a how-to included in an ad or promo piece. Maybe some of our ephemera collectors can weigh in with more on this?

Thanks Alan. I asked because the two Knox Twenty hats I have with the branded Knox wind cord button are purely decorative. They are on an elastic band and not attached to the hat at all. Mine Are likely 1950s hats…. I wonder if the earlier iterations had the actual attached cords.

I seem to remember discussing this with you in the past. If it were one hat I would guess an owner modification - but if the same on two from different sources, perhaps it was a variation on the wind cord theme. This hat is 1950s as well I believe. Certainly many wind cords were removed on or after sale, sometimes coarsely with the vestigial cord nub still visible like an outie belly button.

Being semi-retired the work comes in on an ad-hoc basis. This morning's request wasn't expected so what they will make of the blazer when I get there, who knows? I had actually chosen the cream coloured hat, but when Tina said, "too much yellow and cream," I agreed. Yesterday's hat goes well so it's been pressed into service for another day.
Semi-retired, that's laughable, I have been asked to help out tomorrow. Saturday overtime and I am semi-retired.

Looking excellent as usual, Robert. You dropping in from time to time keeps the others on their toes, so you're definitely providing a service!

This morning I'm sporting my new to me Steel Blue Richman Brothers. The felt is thin and soft with a *******-like feel to it & molds easily without steam.

It gets my vote for hat of the week!

Happy Sunny Saturday to all! Yesterday I trimmed off the American hat brim to 2-5/8" and like it a lot better ( that little bit keeps me from banging into the trucks headrest). Even happier to prove that theres still enough brim for sun blockage.

But in the case of the two Knox Twenty I have with the branded Knox buttons they are just on an elastic loop that you can just slide off And on. Non functional, decorative and removable. A few others here have noticed the same on theirs. On occasion one pops up like Alan‘s Knox Twenty with a Fully functional cord and branded button.

Maybe and it’s a big maybe. Some stores offered to take the branded button from the loop and attach to a real windcord.
