Thanks. It is great that “local” hat makers still exist so you can commission something a little unique and can be optimised for your dimensions.

I require a higher than normal crown with five and half inches being as low as I can go before the hat sits on the top of the head rather than the crown.

I only in the last few years got into wearing hats as most hats available locally were country style and I felt an imposter wearing them especially the “ten gallon” style that had high enough crown for me.

Then stumbled across the Akubra city range which was started in the 1930’s so had the higher crowns from that era and worked for me.

Bit like caps. A flat cap is ok but newspaper boy suits me much better with my favourite the more structured baker boy style.

Anyway let’s look at the Federation IV deluxe in graphite as shaped by the Queensland shop in the explorer style which takes elements from the “Poet” hat but with the Fedora swoop.

From my fairly extensive collection of black hats, a rare survivor from Vanzina of Pavia manufactured before the era of Borsalino ownership that followed WWII. Vanzina was located in Pavia about 40km south of Milan. The retailer was in Brunico near to the border with Austria and the style shows the tirolese influence with tall crown, narrow brim and deeply curled rear flange.

Great shape. Love the ribbon and bow treatment. Still has its basting stitches, too. An Italian hat that just has it all!

Robert, that blazer is simply AWESOME!!! And yes, I discovered about 15 years ago that the word "semi", appended to the word "retirement" is really just a (mild) form of self-deception.

Thank you Mark. Semi-retired for me, working about fifteen to twenty hours a week, is more of a paid hobby. After years of sombre suits as general manager, it's fun to dress as the mood takes me. One of the perks I had previously, was a company supplied car. With retirement that has now gone. Nowadays my wife Tina, and I, share a car, but when two cars are required it's great fun to turn up at work, weather permitting, in the old MG.

No doubt Akubra make great hats. The Fed is a great blank canvas for 1930s style recreation.

Being semi-retired the work comes in on an ad-hoc basis. This morning's request wasn't expected so what they will make of the blazer when I get there, who knows? I had actually chosen the cream coloured hat, but when Tina said, "too much yellow and cream," I agreed. Yesterday's hat goes well so it's been pressed into service for another day.
Semi-retired, that's laughable, I have been asked to help out tomorrow. Saturday overtime and I am semi-retired.

Excellent choice.

I agreed to cover a manager at work this morning, That manager is about to become a Daddy. He's excited now but wait until the little one keeps him awake at night.

Yesterday's intended hat, the cream bespoke is my choice for work this morning. Tina is still in bed so I can't ask her to photograph it but I can recycle a recent photo:
