People of the past must have had small heads. Everytime I come across a hat in an antique store they are always so tiny. Im conviced that every person born before 1970 was miniature. Awesome find though, almost like time traveling. Really cool.
Michael I was born many years before the 1970 and I'm a full 7 1/2 ;)
Very small size were more common from before the WWII here in Italy

Many thanks for that, Steve. Very interesting indeed. Thanks as always for sharing.

Steve, You see 1/4 Point size used for pre WWII German and Austrian Stiff Felt Hats and Silk Top Hats. I have never seen a 1/4 Point size used for a pre WWII German or Austrian Soft Felt Hat. My guess is they wanted more exacting sizing for Stiff Felts and Silk Top Hats. I am not sure if other European countries used 1/4 Point sizing but highly probably.

Here is a JHS Chart probably from the late 1800s to early 1900s with 1/4 Point Sizes. Not sure why 6 1/4 is 60cm. Misprint?

Here is another one from Der Filzhut (The Felt Hat), seine Geschichte und seine Herstellung (Its History and Preparation). Hrsg.v.d. Deutschen Hutmacher-Zeitung (German Hat Maker Newspaper). 1936

That, or everything we've heard about hat felts being superior during The Golden Era was all lies and every one of those hats shrunk to astonishingly small sizes over the years.

Then again, those Anthropologists have documented evidence that we as a species have grown larger over the last century or so, so...

That smile says it all. Great hat!

Mayser "Libelle", 58 cm, possibly later 1950s. The Felt has a great color / finish and easily dry creases. Also a really interesting Bow and Brim treatment. This is my second "Libelle" so not a common Mark.

Unique "Echter Mayser" Celluloid Label attached to the Sweatband. I have never seen one of these before so a very pleasant surprise.

Sunbody Hats, open crown 4" brim. Built like a tank, smells like silege, molds like wet clay when soaked with water. Need to fix the tapered crown? Doesn’t look to have much taper. I tried re-blocking a SunBody a couple years ago with no luck. The palm just would not stretch. It molds great, but it doesn’t stretch worth a darn.

Another great old Mallory. This time a soft felt homburg. The brim has a lot more of the D’Orsay curl than my later vintage Homburgs. The felt is a super dark inky blue. I juxtaposed it with my black derby to demonstrate that it is actually blue…it looks the darkest black except in bright direct light.
