If I may ask, what and where is this mysterious Cavanagh thread, that I can’t find?It is indeed a "5", Rockwater. I found a few labels that are similar on the "Cavanagh" thread. Similar but not exact. Hmm.....

The frayed ribbon, and the style of ribbon, was what first made me think it was a Cavanagh. I could see it in the sellers EBay pictures. Here's a picture of my late 1930's Cavanagh on top of the Mystery hat for bow comparison:The unfinished (frayed) back of the bow was also a signature feature that Cavanaugh (exclusively?) used well beyond the time when other manufacturers stopped it.
It is here: http://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/the-cavanagh-club.37297/If I may ask, what and where is this mysterious Cavanagh thread, that I can’t find?
I just checked my Pimbell, which I am 95% certain is a Cavanagh product, and it has no factory stickers other than two with different sizes on them (7 1/4, 7 3/8), probably an indicator from the edge felting department of what the finished hat had to be blocked to. So, sorry, no help there.
For all t's Cavanacity, however, it has no fray to the bow.
That got a groan AND an eye-roll!When I asked the ribbon treatments on all my Cavanaghs if they were special, they all responded, "I'm a frayed Knot!"
Sorry, Greg... rough day!
Now if I could get this one to say, " I'm a frayed Knox" my mystery would be solved! When I asked the ribbon treatments on all my Cavanaghs if they were special, they all responded, "I'm a frayed Knot!"

Thanks Moe. It may be the case with this hat that it was made for Wanamaker by Cavanagh but has no Cavanagh signature on it. But then you'd have to worry about what else the hat might know...you could get back from Vegas and have to tell the wife "whatever the hat says is a damn lie! "Now if I could get this one to say, " I'm a frayed Knox" my mystery would be solved!

That reminds me of a hat I saw somewhere online where you could clearly see a Dobbs logo underneath a Penney's Towncraft stamp on the sweat. Maybe that one was meant to be a Cav but just missed the final inspection for something or another. Not a new hat to me, but here is the Private label Cav. I picked up inadvertently about three or four years ago. I was actually just interested in the "Levine Hats" box, (for my pal, Bruce Levine) but imagine my complete delight when I opened it up and found this... IN MY SIZE!!!
My theory is that Cavanagh had two qualities of private label, and this one was a second quality, thus the attempted hiding of the embossed Cavanagh name on the sweatband. The one you found from Wannamaker was most likely NOT a second, and was manufactured to the store's specs. Just my guess.

That's a gorgeous hat! I do like brown, though. Did you add yours to the Cav thread?
Understandable, RW. You should send that nasty-colored thing to me!!![]()
Thanks, not yet, but will do.That's a gorgeous hat! I do like brown, though. Did you add yours to the Cav thread?
John Lofgren Monkey Boots Shinki Horsebuttt - $1,136 The classic monkey boot silhouette in an incredibly rich Shinki russet horse leather.
Grant Stone Diesel Boot Dark Olive Chromexcel - $395 Goodyear welted, Horween Chromexcel, classic good looks.
Schott 568 Vandals Jacket - $1,250 The classic Perfecto motorcycle jacket, in a very special limited-edition Schott double rider style. Thanks, Mike. It's quite comfortable, but not as nice as a good full leather one.Super colors. Interesting sweat configuration. How does that feel?
Thanks, John. I think the hat has a more European feel to it with more taper to the crown. This is a very nice hat, but Matt's POLAR is exceptional.Great find!
First thing I thought was Matt's THE POLAR by Adam...
Sounds like an idea for a new thread: "Show Us Your Inside-Out Hats!"...I Could wear it inside out.
