Found this Mayser green heather felt this week. Very soft, as heathers tend to be, and with an unusual construction of the sweatband; a stretching band with a leather piece in the front. Size 57, with a raw edge brim at 6,5 cm and a crown 10,5 cm at the pinch. Label states Atlanta-Modena. It was a lot more fluffy when it arrived on my doorstep, but I liked it better with the felt a bit more well groomed.

My wife bought me this Stetson STC323 khaki hat this afternoon. 4 1/2” crown, 2 1/2” brim. It was $35 so the price was right for a summer hat. I like the color, fit and the fact that it’s well ventilated.

I just got this one.... Sort of a mystery hat. I think it's late 1930's / early 40's. The only brand markings on it , "John Wanamaker" in gold on the unreeded sweat. Felt is extremely clay-like. Cavanagh edge and a Cav looking frayed ribbon. A search of the FL under "Wanamaker" mentions that John Wanamaker was a large department store that carried................... Cavanagh hats! It could be just wishful thinking on my part though. Thoughts?

I'm with Jim on this search. About the only clue is the style of the reorder tag, the feel and finish sound like a high end hat though.

That was a good idea Jim. I compared it with the Cavanagh that I own and it is a little different. Could be it's just a little older hat though. I'll look through the thread and see if I can find a similar tag. Thanks

Thank you for the compliment on this hat. I wish I could say with 100% certainty that it is a Cavanagh. All signs point to it but without a liner it is hard to say for sure.

Thanks for the Wanamaker store picture , Mike. The signature is the older version used by the store. The felt on this hat is identical in feel to the felt on my Cavanagh. Very high end for sure.

Yes, the Wanamaker store was the premier department store in Philadelphia. I remember going to the store as a child. My Mother and Aunt used to drag me around shopping there. I am sure they sold many different brands of hats; however, I know they had a close relationship with Stetson, as Stetson hats were manufactured in Philadelphia for many of those early years. A Wanamaker signature hat could, of course, be anything, but one would have to consider Stetson as well. Hopefully one of our expert loungers will be able to identify that hat.

The 40’s Cav I have has a four digit block number starting with the numeral 5, as do the photos of factory labels I have seen in the Hatted Professor. Could the first digit in your block number be a 5? It’s a bit hard to make out in your photo.
But, the proof is in the puddin’.

The unfinished (frayed) back of the bow was also a signature feature that Cavanaugh (exclusively?) used well beyond the time when other manufacturers stopped it.

Thank you, D. It's possible that it is a Stetson product, but the style of the reorder tag makes me think it is from another maker. I'm still leaning toward Cavanagh but not ready to rule anything out!

It is indeed a "5", Rockwater. I found a few labels that are similar on the "Cavanagh" thread. Similar but not exact. Hmm.....
