I know Marilyn et al has a lot more cash than probably all of us here but that's the joy of vintage - you can copy/imitate your favourite star with some imagination - and perhaps by being prepared to do some serious searching!

I love that concept. I like to think of my chosen outfit as an inspiration, because although I know my "copy" won't come out like that, it's still fun to think I can get all the pieces together from my existing wardrobe. For example, if I wanted to copy Marilyn's suit, I could get close in black and silver.

Along those same lines of "How To Marry A Millionaire," you might like the fashions in "The Opposite Sex," a 1956 remake of "The Women" (1939). It was filmed in glorious color, but this b&w photo is the least fuzzy example of the fashions I could easily find.

Jean's dress in this film is an ART MODERNE DELIGHT.

Aside from Jean's dress, it's not the budget that prevents me from wearing this style. I can easily make these skirts and I'm sure I could find tops at Target or H&M that could pass. It's my figure that prevents me from wearing these clothes. I just don't think I look good in them. I'm also not a huge skirt fan because of the shifting -- there's a 10 inch difference between my hips and waist and I can never get it to fit right. So I stick to dresses.
