Right now, as far as chain-food goes I've been finding Jersey Mike's #13, the Original Italian, surprisingly good for fast-food. Meat's sliced fresh while you wait, but the pickles they use are worth commenting on in their own right, crisp, tart and just thick enough to give you a good "snap"--way better than the shavings a lot of other big-name sandwich shops use.
A great pickle like that can make all the difference to a short meal sandwich.

My favorite hands down is a leftover meatloaf sandwich. Homemade on good homemade bread is tops but I'll eat leftover Swanson's on wonder bread and still like it.

I just was saying the same thing in the "whats for dinner" thread....not the all time favorite but super good, for sure!

I know those, but the Chuckwagon was even better -- it was swiss cheese, cotto salami, sliced ham, boloney, and American cheese, on a poppy-seed bulkie roll. Stick that baby in the infra-red oven for forty-five seconds and peel off the cellophane, and that's some good eatin'.

They also had a burrito that was pretty good, even though it smelled like a cheap fly-by-night carnival when you heated it up.

Don't all burritos smell like that?

The "chuckwagon" sounds like some Midwestern truck stop version of a muffaletta, which is also an especially delicious treat, if prepared properly. If not, it can be down right horrible. The best ones in the universe come from Central Grocery on Decatur Street down in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

I guess I should also add shrimp or crawfish po-boys to my list of favorites too, since we're talking about N.O.
Man, I'm hungry now just thinking about them.

As to the breaded mystery meat patties , I'm pretty sure they were called "chuckwagon" patties, at least down here. They were pre-cooked, like fish sticks, and we had 'em a lot growing up.

What is a lunch time sandwich without a bowl of soup? Today I made a salami sandwich with saurkraut and mustard for lunch and Campbell's tomato soup. On a whim I hopped up the soup with a big spoonful of salsa, it was pretty good in a Tex Mex kind of way. I still haven't figured out what sandwich would go with it best.
