I dunno, my hair is really pourus so it sucks up all the dye & it doesn't seem to leak onto my clothes or bedsheets. However, because of the sponge like texture of my hair, the blue dyes wash out so quickly, when Ihad stripes I had to re do them every other day. The pink & red ones stain my hair though, and just go lighter rather than was out completely.

I love directions though. It is so much fun to get everywhere; all over my face/hands/arms/bathroom lol

When I was dying my hair red, I loved the Ion dyes from Sally's. They seem to go on easier and the application was MUCH more even then one of the box sets I tried. With that one (can't remember which one it was) there were a few areas that were still blonde. Also, its really cheap, like $2 for the dye and another $3 for enough developer to get you through a lot more applications. They also seel some great conditioner at Sally's that I use afterward. I used a mix of the dark red blonde and medium red brown when red. Now I've gone back to my natural color for the most part (there's still a lot of red in it) and let the professionals take care of it. Whenever it gets to ashy, I just use a ash blonde type dye on it and it looks good again, but i do that sparingly because it is dye and it does damage hair. If tried that red gold corrector and it also works great.

Back in the day when I dyed my hair black, i used Loreal Feria Starry Night (Blue black), and I loved it, but I am a natural blonde, so I sometimes had issues with it fading out quickly! I have since returned to a light strawberry blonde, using the Loreal Frost and Design kit for blonde/light brown hair. I love it!!! The cap is a little tough to get used to, but the color is great! Has anyone tried the new "Dream Blonde" kits?? if so, someone please give me a review, i have heard good and bad!

I've always found that Directions leaks onto my clothes! Is that because my hair isn't pre-lightened maybe? It's a shame because my colour looks great if I put a pink dye over the top of my regular dye.

Well sometimes it does come off onto pillows and things but it always washes out really easily. It does come off onto towels too yes more so, maybe because hair is wet at the time? And my clothes are mainly black I think so maybe that's why I haven't noticed it on tops.

I think it lasts fairly long, it's the best pink i've used. I've had dye shipped from America, used the [pink dye in the hairsdressers and actually that's the worst!

Pravanna 7.66 for me. 20 vol at the roots and semi perm developer on the ends. I have also used Redken Shades Bonfire or Rocket Fire many times.

I spontaneously decided to color my hair pitch black, so I picked up some L'Oreal Casting cream color. It's not permanent color but it's given me the best shine of my life! My hair is so shiny it blitzes my eyes.

I don't really think the black suits me, though, my eyes don't really seem to pop. I've had it before and I remembered it looked good but now that I have it again I'm not so sure. But it's fun for a change.

I use henna. I like the way it turns my grey hair almost a pink red and my brown hair auburn, so I have highlights. And in the sun it looks like fire.

Josephine - I have a jar of henna but I have been hesitant to use it because I'm afraid I'm going to mix it up wrong. Do you have any tips?? Thanks

There's no reason to hesitate with henna, however you mix it is good and safe, as long as you aren' allergic. I just mix it with boiled hot water until the consistency is the way I like it. Sometimes I also add lemon juice or apple cider vinegar.

I let it sit for two hours. Maybe you should just try with one. I don't really know if there is any max time with henna. I've been told two is max but I think I could easily leave it in longer.

Oh, and also try and apply the henna while it is warm, but of course not so hot that you burn your scalp and fry your hair. And then put on a plastic cap and put a towel on your head to keep in the heat.

These are just my experiences, but there are a lot of good henna resources online. Or you can just try it out and adjust it along the way. Henna is not harsh like chemical dyes, so you can just experiment with it.

Just one more thing: On some henna packages it says that you should not mix it in a metal bowl nor with metal spoons. Now, I don't know if this has any substance to it, but I've always used a wooden bowl and spoon.

When I used to Henna my hair the packet used to say you could leave it on for up to 6 hours... so I reckon there's no real upper limit!

Sorry for the delay! The way I mix henna (the 100% stuff, not the kind from a mainstream grocery store with "other things" mixed in) (and this is for about 200 gms) is to put it in a mixing bowl, add something acidic (like red wine or lemon juice) about 1/4 cups worth (you just need enough to start the reaction) and about 2-2.5 cups of water.

I have it down so I know how much I need and add it all at once, because adding it a bit at a time can make it stiff to stir, but you don't want to add too much water then it will be soupy. You want it about the consistency or yogurt. Spreadable but not drippy. If I make it too drippy I put it on dry hair, then my hair will soak up the extra water. Then I put plastic wrap over it and stick it on top of my refrigerator for about 12 hours.

After that I check it by taking a spoon and "digging into it". The top should be a dark olive green and under a brighter green. This means that it's oxidized. Then I put it all into a ziplock bag (if I'm only doing my roots) and take it to the bathroom. Your hair should be clean, but I've done it on two day old unwashed hair and it's come out fine. I've started using scotch tape to "mask off" my face (like painters do) because henna will stain skin, some people use Vaseline but that's just worked ok for me.

Put on a pair of latex gloves. If your doing your whole head you can just glop it on from the bowl and mush it around, if I'm doing my roots (ears forward only, the back gets done every 2 months or so) I snip a corner off the ziplock bag and pipe it out like frosting. Pipe it down the part, use a rat tail comb to make another part close by, flip the hair over, mush it down into the henna and pipe another line of henna on the part. Repeat. Just like with regular hair color.

After all that is all done I usually pipe more over my hairline in the front to make sure that is covered, then I wrap my head in plastic wrap and sit under a heat cap for a few hours watching a movie, cruising the internet, reading a book... When you rinse it out you need lots of water. Many people fill the tub, lay back in the water and work their fingers through their hair to get most of it out. I recommend getting a cheap (Suave, White Rain, V05) conditioner and after you get most of the henna out, slathering the conditioner in your hair and letting that take the rest of the henna out. Use a facial scrub and/or rubbing alcohol to get the stain on your skin off.

It sounds like a lot of work, and in the beginning as you're getting the hang of it it can be "awkward", but I like the color it gives me and I like that it isn't a chemical.

I know of some people who sleep with henna on. My max is 3 hours, I get sick of it on my head by then.
