I was in Arab East Jerusalem once and passed a meat store with a horse tail hanging on the wall. I didn't stay for lunch.

I've always wondered what horse tastes like. Does it taste like chicken (per the joke that everything tastes like chicken) or like beef?

Like Tony says it tastes like slightly sweet beef, very lean and tender too. Had it a few times in France as a steak and in Japan as sashimi.

If you like beef and ever have the opportunity, then give it a try!

As a kid, we always heard that saying about sending horses to the glue factory.

Yep. You may recall Boxer (a horse) from "Animal Farm" was sent to the glue factory despite the exhortations of Squealer (one of the pigs) to the contrary.

Some animals are more equal than others. [huh] (Is this apropos of the US law on horsehide?)

Glue is made from bones and tendons, and guess what else - skin! But not only from horses but from many animals.

In the early days (think Egypt glory days), they made hideglue and it is still one of the strongest glues known to man, but yes epoxy is stronger. The only downside is that it dissolve in water.
I have used hideglue to make bows like the egyptians and the glue is extremely sticky and once dried it becomes rockhard!

Yes it is the same as gelatin, and gelatin can be used as glue (since its the same :D)

They also made fishglue in the old days and I believe horse/cattle/fish -parts are still used for making various kinds of glue/gelatin. I dont find it offensive, I think its better to use what we have. As long as its the "waste parts" I dont have a problem with it.

I know what you mean. I gave all of this a lot of thought some years ago. The conclusion I came to was that if I had to I'm sure I could get over any personal squeamishness. I did make a point of watching a BBC show called "Kill it, Cook it, Eat it" where they did just that, in order to satisfy myself that I did really believe an animal could be killed humanely for food and other purposes. I was. Thing is, though, now that we live in the society we do, many people contribute in many different ways. I'm in education, others are in meat (and other animal product) production. Until the zombie plague breaks things down, I think it best to leave animal slaughter to those who are trained and skilled, and therefore unlikely to make an animal suffer the way I might.

I thought they used horse bones for gelatin, even in the US, maybe that's where the horses to the glue factory things came from, gelatin is a glue like substance and I believe they used to actually use horses for glue.

I was always told it was the hooves they melted down for glue.

I was in Arab East Jerusalem once and passed a meat store with a horse tail hanging on the wall. I didn't stay for lunch.

I wonder was the tail an advertisement that they did horsemeat, or do they do something with the tail out there (a la Oxtail soup).

Absolutely: if we're gonig to take from nature, we should take only what we need and not waste anything if we can avoid it.

I hate to see anything mistreated, but horsehide isn't coming from horses that commit suicide or die of natural causes. The horses are being slaughtered for some reason. Perhaps these horses should carry organ donation type cards: If I'm slaughtered, please send my hide to Horween.

Cool... that makes sense. :)

Navin.. it tastes like a slightly sweet, sticky version of beef....horrible to my english palate.

Ther was an article in the news today saying that last year one man shot 1800 dartmoor ponies last year and as he couldn't think of anything profitable to do with the carcases he sent them to feed the lions at the nearest zoo ...what a bloody waste.

Mind you if he knew about the horsehide trade he would probably have wiped the population out altogether.

That is a waste... how horrible! So horsemeat is sticky? Trying to picture this but the only sticky foods coming to mind are sticky rice and peanut butter. :D

Thanks Aether! I'd definitely be willing to keep an open mind (open stomach too) and give it a try. :)

Great info... thanks Griff! :)

 Sure, the horses are being killed anyhow, so best not to waste anything.

This makes good sense since I doubt the US market would have sufficient hides to meet demand even within this country. At least not without prices well over 15/ sq ft.
