You Realise Christmas Is Approaching When …

It's Christmas time when I have to dig out this book:
https://www.amazon.com/Die-Hard-Christmas-Illustrated-Holiday/dp/1608879763

Although it strongly resembles a children's book, I assure you it is not.

(Can't you tell from my daughter's horrified reaction when I read the book to her?)

Dear Fellow Ladies and Gents.

Christmas 2022 is approaching in seven-league boots!

Last year, Elton John and Ed Sheeran initiated a project to write and perform a new Christmas pop song that should challenge all-time high Last Christmas by Wham!. The title of the result seems humble – a simple "Merry Christmas". But as I today started listening to Christmas music (yes, yes!) this song tugged at my heartstrings.

Why?

Mostly because of the lyrics. They seem to have anticipated what would happen exactly two months after last Christmas to Europe. It's only five hours by car from the place where I live to the place where death, destruction and violence prevail. And it's the place where my sponsored family lives. They encounter electricity shortages on a daily basis, they spend many hours each week in the air-raid shelters. Parents with three children, aged 14, 10, and 8. And apart from praying there's so little I can do for them; Austrian post enabled people to send humanitarian aid packages free-of-charge, but ceased this offer three weeks ago. I used to send supplies over to them, things they're in need of, but now I can hardly manage sending only one package every couple of months since postage cost is beyond good and evil.

So, it was in 2021, and yet we could read the lines:
I know there's been pain this year but it's time to let it go – next year, you never know
or:
While we're here, can we all spare a thought for the ones who have gone?

Listen to this song. I promise you'll be shedding tears.

…you don’t find any ginger snaps in the supermarket shelves because they’re sold out since September.
