You know you're getting old when you know somebody just ten years older than you are who's a great-grandparent.
Yes, that is freaky. You know that you must be getting old when you've never heard the current pop song that everyone is humming. And when you are told the name of the band, you've never heard of them either.

For me this happens regardless of whether they're musicians, or actors, or authors, or whichever career has made them a "celebrity". I'll see a television report or read an online article about a young celebrity, or group of young celebrities, and usually my first thought will be, "I have absolutely no idea who any of these people are or why they're famous."

Here's a good one:

You are getting old, when you are 31 and on visiting relatives and having a relatively good sleep there, you nontheless realize more than in the past, that you are looking forward to your own bed at home.

You are getting old, when you prefer to sit down, relax a little and enjoy a lovely sweet cup of tasteful coffee, without any talking around, before starting further daily action.;)

You know you're getting old when you think of something you ought to post in this thread, but can't remember if you've already posted it or not, and when you sit down to post it anyway, you've forgotten what it was.

I can't count the times I'm out and about and see or think about something I want to post about later - "oh, that would be a good thing to ask about in the ...thread" or "I want to bring this idea up in the ...thread," but once I get into the computer, SBS (small brain syndrome - had it my entire life, but it does get worse with age) hit and my mind is blank.

What I am learning really helps is to treat it like a crime solving event - I think about where I was, what I was thinking about before or after, what I was looking at, etc. and, fifty or so percent of the time, I can bring it back. But sadly, rarely had to do that when I was younger. Perhaps, I should look at this analogous to a savvy veteran pitcher who compensates for his slowing fastball by using guile and craftier pitchers. At leasts it's something I can tell myself to make myself feel better.

Reminds me of The Beverly Hillbillies, when Jeb And Granny, didn't know Rock Hudson and thought Marry Pickford was still making movies!

Rock who???;)
We had a judge, name of James Pickles, who earned infamy for saying, in court, in 1968: "And pray, who are The Beatles?" I would have warmed to him if he had some consistency. He imprisoned a pregnant woman for something quite minor, the sentence was reduced to probation on appeal, yet he gave a suspended sentence to a serial offender for something quite grave and deserving of a custodial sentence.

I was in the Army from 1967-1970. When Operation Desert Storm rolled around I was shocked at how young the lieutenants and buck sergeants looked. Now I see pictures from Iraq and Afghanistan and I'm shocked at how young the colonels and master sergeants look.

You know you're getting old when you've got a box full of different eyeglass lenses that you swap back and forth in your frames to try and match up with whatever vision fluctuation is going on with your eyes this week.

I'm not at that level, yet, but it's only been a year since I got stronger reading glasses and I'm already stretching my arm out to read things again. Sigh.
