One of the thing we try to do at the CHG with reenacting is explose everyone to as much war time culture. Music, Movies and the people involved. Our Allied and Axis pages have this for

American
British
Russian

German

I checked out your links and you do have a very nice selection. Your reference to Jo Stafford is correct. She was prolific and very popular with the guys and is one of my all time favorites.

Official march of the French Foreign Legion performed at the traditional 88 steps per minute.

My gosh. I never heard of this song, so I listened to it. It was VERY familiar to me as "The French Foreign Legion March." This song is played every year on 10 November at the Marine Corps' birthday celebration when the ceremonial staff marches into the ceremonial area at all major commands. The only difference is I believe it is done in 120 beats per minute. Very motivating march! Here it is (preceded by Adjutant's Call): http://www.obxmarines.com/ceremonial_music/adjutants_call.mp3

To see the Legion at it's finest look on Youtube at the end of any Bastille Day parade in Paris. The Legion are always the last to march. They are led by "les Sapiers" all with beards, leather aprons and axes!!!!!!

I have always been fond of Vera Lynn singing the following WW II song.

Wish me luck, as you wave me goodbye.

Wish me luck, as you wave me goodbye.
Cheerio, here I go,on my way.

Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye.
With a cheer, not a tear, make it gay.

Give me a smile,I can keep for a while,
In my heart while I'm away.

Till we meet once again you and I,
Wish me luck as you wave me goodbye.

Wish me luck, as you wave me goodbye.
Cheerio, here I go, on my way

Wish me luck, as you wave me goodbye.
With a cheer, not a tear, make it gay

Give me a smile, I can keep for a while,
In my heart while I'm away.
Till we meet once again You and I
wish me luck as you wave me goodbye.

USS Reuben James

As long as we are doing Woody Guthrie songs, don't forget The Sinking of The Reuben James! She was sunk on Halloween 1941 with the loss of 115 crew men by the German U552, almost two months before Pearl Harbour. After that, sentiment in the US started to change towards the war and the Germans, 62 percent of American approved of shoot to kill German U-Boats. If Roosevelt wanted to declare war on Germany, this along with the torpedoing of the USS Kearny gave him the excuse to declare war, of course, he didn't! "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" by Kitty Kallen is an often over looked song that was a hit in 1944 from the movie "Thank Your Lucky Stars". In the movie Betty Davis performed the song, but Kallen's record was the hit. YouTube has both versions:

This is a nice version performed by a community group:

You can't get much better than American patrol by Glenn Miller :D
*yucky*That version is on one of my early Swing music purchases. I don't know if it's just because it doesn't have the vinyl mono sound, but of the 4 copies of "American Patrol" that I have, that one is the worst.

One song from the other side that still has legs is Panzerlied. Written in 1933 when tanks were still to the Germans forbidden, it has become something of an international tankers song. I've heard it sung by members of the British 2RTR and the US 1AD.

A couple of other early war years songs are Gracie Fields' version of Wish Me Luck,

and George Formby's Imagine Me On the Maginot Line.
