If you've ever seen the two-part episode "The Menagerie" you've seen a lot of the first pilot as it was incorporated into the plot. I was fortunate enough to see the first pilot at a science fiction convention in LA in the late '70s.

Its been broadcast on regular TV. For a long time there was only a B&W copy of the CAGE original. So it was cut with the color footage from Menagerie. Wish I had that VHS copy. Something about it going from color to B&W made it seem more precious.
Eventually in the `90s , someone found an all color copy in Roddenberry's archives.

As a golden age tidbit, when they were looking for cameramen to work on th show, they found a semi-retired cinematographer who worked on...GoneWiththeWind.

MrBern: "The Cage" is on the third season box set of Star Trek. Unfortunately, there's not many episodes in the third season that make it completely worth paying that much.

I've never had any interest in owning the DVDs.
And now the Remastered versions are higher resolution for HDtv, so another reason not to buy them.

As for third season, yes no budget & filler.
But the HDRemastered 3rd season eps TholianWeb, ParadiseSyndrome, & Spock'sBrain ...just great stuff.

IMHO the sequence of the Captain & bridge crew trying to reason out which mysterious planet to seek out Spock'sBrain was probably the best scene of any season. Even Uhura got some good lines.

Well, he probably meant figuratively given that they're two different characters. (And any Trekkie knows that. :p)

Well, exactly, just as any Trekkie or Trekker knows who played a Romulan, a Vulcan, and later a Klingon. But in a sense it was a real demotion for Majel Barrett, who went from playing one of the lead characters to a much smaller part.

You notice that the one female officer on the bridge was never placed in charge?

I haven't. By the time I found out what station and what time the remastered episodes aired (I swear it was like pulling teeth...), it was too late to see some of the all time greats they syndicated last fall.

Needless to say, I will be reserving the remastered first season on DVD, with or without "The Cage" being on it. (Though I really hope it is eventually, since it was on the original third season set.)

Thats a shame that so many cities havent advertised the Remastered broadcasts. In NYC its on at 2am Sunday nite. Uggh.
But you trekkies knwo you can easily check on startrek.com link

Also MontyPython.
Who was the female member of the group? Carol Cleveland?

Theyve since admitted that they pretty much never knew what to write for her. But they certainly had plenty of time to make jokes in drag.

Behind the 8 ball,..
I have always lamented the exclusion of Majel Barrett from the series. She was awesome! She had a sort of comic book heroine look about her that was perfect for a show like Star Trek. I think Jeffrey Hunter was a way better choice as captain of the Enterprise too.

I DO have it! I no longer have a VHS player and I haven't watched it in years, but it was part of the set they released around 84-85, and I believe it does alternate between color and black and white.

My hero!
Is it my imagination, or does the Orion dance seem a little lewder in that version?

Unfortunately Jeffrey Hunter had problems with the management. Or rather, his wife did. It came down to "Jeffrey wants this" etc. and they couldn't work like that on a TV series.

Leonard Nimoy also noted that he didn't have nearly as much chemistry with him as he did Shatner, even in their first scenes together. That's important, more than anything. The girl who played my wife in a play I was in was lovely. Yes, lovely, but we didn't have any chemistry whatsoever on stage. It was unfortunate, and given the choice between a hammy actor who made me feel at ease and one who I didn't get on with as well... I'd pick the hammy actor! lol

This thread has really deviated from the original topic... but it's my thread and I'll cry if I want to. Or something. :p

See what I said above. I learned it in Star Trek Memories, a great book by William Shatner.

Another such unfortunate incident in Star Trek history involves Kirstie Alley, with her agent filling in as the demanding wife. They were asking for a bigger salary than Shatner, Kelley, and even Nimoy (who directed Star Trek III) were getting! Needless to say, she couldn't come on to III because of that.
