Shipped this off a few days back. Nutria, dress weight felt, 160grams, Cobalt blue. I pounced it as thinly as I dared to soften/lighten it up.
2 1/2" brim, 4 3/4" crown at the pinch, 5" at the sides. Silver gray vintage grosgrain ribbon. View attachment 642622 View attachment 642623
I googled "custom Nutria dress hat the fedora lounge" and this thread is one of the results. I'm curious what you think of using Nutria for dress hats compared to beaver, particularly, and rabbit. I was thinking about it because I don't have anything in Nutria right now, and I'd like to have a really nice one I can hold in my hands.

I don't like working with Nutria as it presents difficulties not encountered with rabbit or beaver. 160gr is a tweener weight, a bit heavy for dress weight but light for western. It fits a niche for an outdoorsy hat or a more robust dress hat. They now offer a 110gr or so dress weight but I have not worked with it. The distributor, Sunrise offers a great colour palette. For about the same money you can buy a 100% beaver felt that makes for a higher quality hat.

I need to start thinking about what I want to do next. :)

I have made a few hats from Nutria but only the 160gr and heavier. I do own two vintage Nutria.....two Stetsons from the 1930's. Great hats.
The Nutria thing was an idea; one aspect of this for me is the learning and experimentation part - having said that, after reading your most recent response, I’m not sure that Nutria is aligned with my preferences. I’m not particularly looking for a less dressy hat - at least not at the moment. I will probably focus on creative or stylistic departure in beaver from what I’ve already got - something that isn’t particularly accessible in vintage maybe - just kicking around some ideas.

I wanted to have a unique hat within the sameness of the blank hats in my community. No one I know has a 1. custom-made, 2. Nutria, 3. Trimmed with Petersham, not grosgrain. I now have a one-on-one in a sea of black hats.
Well, now I feel honor-bound not to copy you lol - don’t worry I think I’ve got enough black hats - I think I’ll go for some color this time :)

Philosophy question…

Choice 1 - ask my hat guy to refurb and reblock this hat(or similar) up to my size or

Choice 2 - ask my hat guy to make me one

Which would you recommend and why, if I may ask?

I gotta ask why are you even considering this hat. Outside the box, there’s nothing in the listing identified as Stetson. Plastic liner tips came about around 1953, so it ain’t a 40’s hat and the price is laughable. If you want a vintage 1/4 OR, keep looking. They show up often.

Not the greatest but it shines next to what you’re looking at.

That particular hat is just a stand-in for the idea - I’m not married to it - but I like that shape - tall Cattleman etc. :)

Haven’t done any digging on this one in particular.

This is the hat I was actually looking at when I was thinking of this but 1.) this one is too small for me to be willing to monkey with it and 2.)it's in really good shape. I would be looking either getting something custom made similar to this or looking for something that could be brought back to life.

I thought that Stetson put their name inside each hat in the top of the liner and on the sweatband. The hat box is Stetson, is the hat Stetson, that is a hec of a price for the shape the hat is in.
Is that hat rabbit or beaver or a blend?
I would be looking for a new build, in the fashion that you want in the felt of your choice.

OK, that hat is in better shape, looks like a good price, depending on the felt used in the build, should clean up niceley during a rebuild, the only problem is if you need a larger size you will lose some brim width or crown height. If you need a 7 1/4" you could always take 1/8" out of the crown height and 1/8" out of the brim width.
