Perhaps we've forgotten..
I could tolerate the dress/music, etc if it weren't for the "meh" attitude. I wasn't like that when I was younger - my old man woulda put a foot in deep if we were. No manners today. Just try to see a movie, concert, ballgame today without having to listen to someone else's phone call and tweets. It's not forgetting - we still have all those issues, sans hormones - it's now lack thereof lol

Hmm, I see the sarcasm was lost without a little face at the end of it.

I own a number of pink items, and items with pink in them, and wear them as I see fit. Quite honestly, though, before seeing the young man with the glasses, I never gave lavendar a thought. I never see lavendar in the stores in the mens' departments.

Yes I've experienced what you mean. It's not just the Hipster kids tweeting, distracted on the phone, and lacking manners. Adults lead the way in bad behavior.
If young people feel meh about Life or the future it's probably the result the horrible example from adults. I really cannot blame them. I too feel meh after dealing with peers.

The sad thing is that that ghastly Morrisette woman (or whoever wrote the song) clearly has no conception of the meaning of "irony". Everything, absolutely everything, mentioned in that dirge is simply misfortune, not irony.

I don't know if I'd go that far. If you take the definition, 'an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected' (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/irony?s=t), then the song lyrics can fit the definition of irony. For example, if you were expecting nice weather on your wedding day, and it did rain, contrary to the forecast, it is both ironic and misfortune. If the forecast was for rain, and it did rain, then that is just misfortune, as you were expecting rain and it did - no irony.

No one expects to pass away the day after they win the lottery. Again, misfortune, but also irony. You play your whole life, hoping to win, you win, and then you die and can't enjoy it. Irony and misfortune.

Can we please get back to celebrating the Golden Era we love instead of wasting time on people not like us and putting that negative energy out into the Lounge?! So what if the guy wears lavender sunglasses... so what if he is ironic or not ironic... Does it REALLY make a difference in your life? Please remind yourself of the Golden Era Rule, "If you can't say something nice..."

Not totally, but I won't argue that. My kids and their friends are also anti-Hipster. I really like my kids and their friends as they're down to earth, old souls and not pretentious and "woe is me" like many their age. In fact, it was them that really got me informed on the finer details of the Hipsters. I'd wager that it's not just us old farts that feel that way. But indeed, many of us don't like anything new, I'm just not one of them.

This presumes that there is a standard definition for "hipster," which is at best an oversimplification. Just between my locality, a hipster in Oakland is different than a hipster in the Mission district here in SF. And they're both different from "hipsters" in Brooklyn. You do make one correct point though, not everyone my age is taken with hipsters. There are quite a few "anti-hipster" memes in point of fact. However, that was not the thrust of my reply.

I simply don't presume to make too many broad judgments about folks I've never met.

But back to my original point; not everyone accepts the arbitrary distinction made between masculinity and femininity. Ergo, what you regard as the "neutering" of males is not really as such. It is a new framing of what masculinity means in the 2012 by people who choose, consciously or not, to not accept the mores of a past generation.

That's the key right there. Generalizing is most often not a good thing. Although I see them around, I think I've met one guy that could fit the term 'hipster.' He wears the tight clothes and the narrow plastic-framed glasses, thinks his young self is smarter than everyone else, and is kind of whiny-annoying, but he's one guy. That doesn't mean everyone who looks like him is just as annoying.

That is the great irony of the song. The song as a whole is ironic, because it so utterly (and consciously) uses the word ironic to mean something different throughout.

No, I can't agree. If the wedding day was the only day on which it rained, contrary to the forecast on which basis it had been planned, maybe. But otherwise, no. Same as a buffalo in the North Dakota plains is different from a buffalo in the African Savanna. It makes sense.

I suspect a factor in our distaste for 'hipsters' is that they sometimes come across as not authentic.

I can only speak of my own dealings with hipsters, or at least what passes for them here, and what gets me irritated with them has nothing to do, really, with their clothes. It's that they cannot be trusted to live up to their responsibilities: if there's a way they can slough something difficult off on one of the un-hip rabble, they'll do it. And if there's a way they can stiff you out of a buck, they'll do it. And god forbid you should ever expect one to show up for an obligation at a certain specified time.

No doubt these are petty issues to people whose lives revolve around art and creativity and freeing the essences of one's soul and all that stuff. But to those of us who have to clean up the messes, disasters, broken agreements, and unpaid obligations the hipsters leave in their wake it's irritating as hell.

Perhaps hipsters elsewhere follow thru on their obligations, pay their bills, and understand that the real world works on the clock. My apologies for any offense caused to such hipsters if such, in fact, exist.

It's actually good luck to to have rain fall on your wedding dress and even better luck for it to rain on your wedding day in many cultures. I know this because my wedding dress got hit in a flash rainstorm coming out of the seamstress' house, and when I mentioned it to several of my friends, they were happy because it is considered a really good omen- basically nothing better could have happened.

Hipster can be defined as embracing old music and fashion, but claiming it as your own, rather than paying homage or admiring the time period it was from. For example, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, etc. Every hipster has those on their iPod

Ok, then that clears that up! I'm not a hipster. Neither of those are in my iPod. I fully admit I can't stand either :D
