Ahem - :eek:fftopic:

That is if you do not count Denmark and Norway as "wester european" countries MB.
Denmark and Norway was invaded before The Netherlands (April 9, 1940)
Denmark and The Netherlands were both liberated May 5, 1945.
Norway even later - May 8th, 1945.

Sorry - I forgot myself completely - this is "The Dutch Thread". So sorry...:)
That's a good point. Being a long way from Europe my geography of the area is maybe not the best.

I suppose I always thought of Skandinavia as Northern Europe

Well MB - to be honest, I don't know whats up and down downunder either, so it's perfectly understandable.:D
Cheers mate!

hahahaha funny :)

My brother was married to a Danish girl (now divorced) and lived there for a year or so. I would love to get there one day, it's a part of Europe I haven't visited.

Why not start a Denmark thread? Each country has a story to tell

I was pondering the earlier posts about how long countries were occupied by foreign forces.

Poland and Czechoslovakia were invaded in 1939. One could argue they weren't liberated until the fall of communism 50 years later.

Just a thought

That's a reason to love nearly all of Europe!

In that case that's why I love the Czechs.

You are closer than you think. Or - you have read up on the history!
The danish army was small, badly equipped and were not allowed to fight the invading nazis.
Only a very few did.

It's a bit like Kiwis and Canadians. So far I haven't met anyone from Holland yet I've not liked.
Would love to visit Netherlands one day.

I believe that "small" countries - like Netherland - without any coal, oil and whatever natureresources has developed a very openminded and outlooking human nature.
And even more so if you have a coastline.
Everything can come to you and everyting you have to offer as a nation and as human beings - culture, knowhow etc. can get out.
The dutch has always been like that - that's why I love them.
And - as a dane - feel very close to them. (Except when we meet them at the first soccermatch in The World Championship!!!)

Anyway - I can not see what this thread is doing in the "War Room"

True, we're very openminded (sometimes too much) and outlooking.
That's why we expanded our "Empire" with Indonesia, Suriname and the Antilles.
BTW the Antilles were one of the main sources of oil for the U.S. during WWII.
Still regret we sold Manhattan for an apple and an egg.:)
Next monday, after the match I will send "Spitfire" some wise words to ease the pain.;)
