An old friend said, "You look great. But, um, why are you, um, dressed up?" I replied, "Because it's Thursday."
haha thats great! i shall have to use that response.

if i can give my own reason. I sensed something about the modern clothing was not quite right for many years. I never was comfortable in any of it it just wasnt me. tried shopping different stores but none of it worked. Finally about two years ago i got my first fedora and something clicked. Everyone else noticed it worked also. Then i started shopping at thrift stores and found those old styles fit me and my personality perfectly. Found my first vintage suit which almost miraculously fits me like its was made for me.

I'm quite new here as you can tell as its my second post. I've spent most of the day here reading various threads and acquainting myself with everyone.

I'm not into vintage itself but do enjoy the look. For me its not the age of the clothes but the style. I enjoy dressing up to go out for dinner even though I'm wearing a modern suit and a proper hat. The suit may be modern but I try to get ones that evoke a classic style. I believe I'm motivated by not trying to look like everyone else and I really enjoy the time I put into dressing up. Its a ritual. Pick out the shoes (mostly Allen Edmonds), picking the right shirt, tying the tie and getting the knot perfect.....the right cuff links for the occasion...etc. Its not something you can do in a hurry. I like the time and thought I put into it. With everything moving at lightning speed in todays world why not slow things down a bit when getting dressed to go out on the town. It makes a night out special even if its just a Saturday night out for dinner with friends. I like standing at a nice bar with a group of friends, all dressed up (dressed up meaning not the latest party wear...we're too old for that). It adds a seriousness to the outing and we all enjoy the attention although that is not the purpose.

Mostly its about being comfortable and I'm comfortable wearing the right clothes for the occasion even if its working in the yard or garden. I remember my grandfather and uncles wearing old beat up fedoras and worn dress pants to work on the tractor. Never a baseball cap or overalls or sneakers.

I think it's community. The need to belong. I come to the Lounge to share what I have seen and learned in clothing, in the news and in life.

Modern suits have low cut armholes
Vintage hats wear better than just about all modern hats
Wool today is thin and getting thinner
Cigar smoking is okay though cigarettes are bad
People at times find it easier to run away from fears than to confront them

The reason I am here is because it is something to do and I get to learn from interesting and different people. And I'm not just here, I'm everywhere else i want to be as well. Sometimes I get stuck here and forget about the other things that make me who I am and I drown myself in Fedora Lounge, though that is part of life and as a hobby it can be shut off and restart at any time. The friends gained can't be shut off no, though the enamouring mentality for places like the Lounge that can take hold at times can be shut down.

Why... that's always the question. Why not?

I have never been into what is curent or trendy.Ever since I have been old enough to choose my own clothes, i have liked to express myself through fashion. I do sometimes feel that i was born at the wrong time, but that doesn't really have as much to do with it as the fact that i just like to be me. I like the shape of the shoes, the cut of the clothes, the class & feminity of the style. It is just who I am.

As for why I have joined the FL and spend so much time here, it is quite a nice thing to be able to share thoughts & ideas with people who share many of the same values and sensibilities. It is rerefreshing to make a statement and not have someone thinking you're out of your mind.:D

I was walking around in my idle time yesterday, contemplating the how's and why's of the world when I came to this thought: Are we dressing 50 and 60 years out of date to amuse ourselves and others and get attentions, or is there a deeper meaning to all of this and we are all just disappointed with current times?

Sorry to get all deep and crazy with you guys, but it's 3 am and I just got finished reading Fight Club, and am left with nothing else to do. I will admit that I dress this way because I feel out of date now and it just seems so natural. It's weird.

I think this is a great question! My answer is simple ~ I simply feel at home with 'retro' in my wardrobe & in my life. Growing up I tried trends and such, and it never (ever!) felt comfortable and I never felt true to myself. I always loved the old classic films since I was a little girl and this fueled my love of all things old. However, it took me until I was 26 years old before I began to gain my personal style of vintage wear & hair. Louise Brooks was my idol then, so I had my hair cut like hers & threw myself into lots of reading of that time period. I loved it all and it was food for my soul.

When I met my husband his love of retro things along with mine seemed to come together nicely and we both just really sunk our teeths into it when we started decorating our home.

I always thought that I must have been a spiritual guide to someone of another era because it just seems so familiar to me.
