While I may have serious issues with some of the attitudes therein, it's certainly true that the (English, at least) Upper Classes have always behaved in this way. I do wish Boris Johnson would tidy himself up in public; when he appears representing London abroad it seems to me that it reflects ill on London when he doesn't make an effort for his hosts. And there we are back to the debate, I suppose, about when it is appropriate or not to dress according to the feelings of others rather than what you want to do yourself....

I used to know a British MP who was also a baronet. He always went around with half of his lunch and the contents of an ashtray down the front of his suit. Bespoke, rumpled, covered in Partagas ash and scrambled egg, he was still remarkably debonaire.... He caught a hot young wife, too, but she may have just been in it for the title......

I have to remind him of that when, if I am on a cleaning binge and disturbing his peace, he tells me to stop being so 'middle class' and put the Hoover away.
Then there's the Marquess of Bath, master of Longleat house in Wiltshire and famous for his 74 wifelets, who openly admits to 'not being the best of washers. I can't remember when I last washed my hair'.

Watched 2 episodes of "Hoarders" the other day. By the time they pulled the 3rd. dead cat carcass out of a lady's disaster from Gretna, Louisiana I nearly lost my lunch and dinner.

Mental illness evidently crosses all classes.
I am a neat freak and this pushed me into overdrive. Not as bad as I used to be but cannot even remotely understand people like this. At all.

Because he's Boris and therefore just plain amazing. He may not be the best mayor London's ever had, but he's definately the most awesome.

As always, the comments are often just as interesting as the story.

sounds all like commonsense to me.....and heaven. I love coming back from work to my wellies and dog....and if folk don't like it then I reckon they are the ones who are a bit sad, not me. And bear in mind during the second world war soldiers from Ireland etc survived conditions much better than their US counterparts because they could cope with germs.... being too clean can leave you very vulnerable to all sorts of illness. One thing though.it's not posh it's practical people who do this! I'm sure there are plenty of folk without a large estate behind them who don't need to conform to some mc utopia created by marketing companies needing to push more product, outfits make up etc..and dent folk's self confidence.

I think untidiness is not at all class related although eccentricity may be so, due to a limited gene pool. I also think one can be a lady or a gentleman, regardless of whether one lives in a country pile or a council flat, as it is good manners that matter ultimately

And the same reason why we have to clean up twice as much trash off the floor after opera shows or classical music concerts as we do after a regular movie. "Go ahead and throw it on the floor -- they get paid to pick it up."

Sorry, you're honestly telling me that Boris is considered unkempt or untidy or disrespectful in this picture, which accompanied the article. Seriously guys, are people to criticise so thin on the ground? This is what is called persona, and with BJs absurd populist stance, it's the only thing that gets him elected. Every other week we're hearing people rant about stuffy buttoned up politicians (just look at the risible track of the Prince Charles thread in "Suits"). Damned if they do and damned if they don't. They can't win.

Damn that chick behind him to the right is hot.
