I have a pair of the GT's and Iron Rangers from Red Wing and they are both amazing. Dreaming of owning a pair of White's, but not ready to spend the cash yet.

What are your thoughts on the rough out vs standard leather?

Personally, I prefer the standard leather but I am going for a dressier look. I want boots that I can polish to a shine. On another note, I called White's and they will put toe caps on any boot for additional $20. I am still not sure that they are that much nicer than the Beckman/Gentleman Traveler.

So I guess for me it would boil down to the IR in rough out vs the White's Bounty Hunter in RO w/toe cap. Then it just becomes a question of if you are really getting that much more for the $$ w/whites's. I have a pair of GTs that fit me like a glove, so if the IR is on the same last, maybe no reason to get the white mtm...leaves $$ for a set of cat paws to enhance the IR.....tough choices :) Thx for all of the advice.

I really feel that both boots are of extremely high quality. But White's construction stands alone.

I like my GTs but they weren't finished very well, the outer sole was a little hacked at and there are a small rip in the leather at the top of the back that I had to have sewn up. Got a good deal from them at bakers and they look/fit great, but not great quality control..makes me want to try the white's.

I am waiting for my third pair of White's to arrive. Since I got the first pair, I can hardly make myself wear something else in less good weather. Since I got the second (Farmer/Rancher with double leather soles and Vibram on top) I feel I have found the aequivalent of an Aero HWYMan in a boot. Tough as nails and it just get's more beautiful every day it's in use.

the third will be a very low (6") dark brown smokejumper, which will serve as a semi-dress normally would. That is everytime it's too casual for dress shoes and too cold or wet for sneakers. I'll post a few images of the lot when the latest addition has arrived.

Brown Packers 10", Farmer/Rancher Red Dog double sole 6" and brown 6" Smoke Jumpers.

The smoke jumpers weigh in at 1.4 kg per shoe, or 2.8 kg (6.17 lbs) per pair.

Anyone out there own a pair of White's "Traveler" boot? If so please share your experiences and any advice. I am looking for a good boot to wear this fall and winter with a sportcoat and trousers, one that I can dress up/down and wear in foul weather.

Many thanks in advance,

I'm looking for sort of the same type of boot you're looking for. You may also want to consider White's Packer boots.. I've been drooling over these for the last 48 hours. They might be overkill and more rugged than the semi dress Traveler boot, but they do look awesome. I'm so close to pulling the trigger on these.

You won't regret getting the Packers. My pair is 25 years old and still going stong (after a couple of rebuilds.)

I believe the main difference is that the travellers have a lower and 90 degrees heel, which will make them more versatile style-wise and also another bit lighter. Regarding the upper construction they seem to be rather similar.

btw.I would recommend getting the rolled top, but I feel the lining is not really necessary.

I've been eyeing the White's for a while. Anyone here who owns some a So Cal'er? If so, did you find a local place to try a pair, or did you just measure yourself and order them?

You can go to The Stronghold in Venice Beach, ask for Bill, tell em Glen sent ya. Wear a vintage Stetson.
