Is sock garter the proper name for them? It would be cool if they made a rivival. One of my friends dated a man from Greece who had the coolest pair of ivory socks that his grandmother had knitted for him. I can't recall the name of the pattern/style. He needed garters for those though, they slouched around his ankles.

You can still find New Old Stock Sock Garters (yes sock garters is fine ) if you look around. They keep socks up that's for sure. I don't want there to be a revival. All the NOS pairs will dry up.

I find NOS vintage ones once in a wile and I pick them up on the cheap. Search Ebay.

You'll find Paris brand mostly. Good stuff, I like them and so do most girls I meet.

Single or double grip both work fine but the double gives the socks a more even appearance---in case one fails you know.

Male Sock Garters?

You have got to be kidding me. Garters are for women to hold up silk stockings. White socks? They make womens legs look fat.

I went to a ballroom dance competition, and I realized that day I had forgot to pack black socks, and since my pants had poor breaks as it is, and all the moving I'm going to be doing, these things are going to stick out like sore thumbs, and ruin the whole outfit. (which was more important than the actual dancing). So in a hopless frenzy I hacked the tops of the socks off with sissors after I put on my shoes, making it look like I was wearing no socks, but offering me all of the comfort of socks. It still wasn't ideal, but instead of looking like a dolt who wears distracting socks, it made the whole outfit look sort of peasantish, I'll post the pictures when I find them.

Moral of the story is, white socks are the devil and as of now I only wear them with boots so they can't be seen. Socks really help out an outfit, and to sometimes jazz up a grey suit with black shoes, I'll throw on a pair of burgondy socks to match the tie, and navy socks with my tan and navy saddle shoes. The socks really contribute alot. Especially when I wear black shoes, red socks, black pants, black shirt, red tie, red jacket, and black hat.

Assure you, we're not kidding. In fact, most elite male actors in Hollywood's golden past wore sock garters. They're great because they'll keep your socks up and will keep a man looking his best.

White socks? I've never noticed any girls wearing over the calf white gym socks. I always see today's girls wearing as little as possible. That's the state I live in I guess.

Oh, and I'm sure even the Duke wore them when off the set. It was rather embarrassing to be seen with droopy socks wile on the town! At one time it was any way.

Sock garters are tempting, because I too hate saggy socks. I just worry about the possible negative effect on the opposite sex. My daily clothing already puts me in the possible "eccentric" category. Sock garters might move me into the "old man" category.

And as to how wearing pants means they don't show, well, my prime concern regarding the garters is that when my pants come off the garters will queer the deal if you take my meaning...



By the way, I have a large original group photograph of the Oxford cricket or tennis team from the 1930s and all of the men in the picture are wearing cream-colored suits with cricket vests underneigth, brown cap-toe shoes and WHITE SOCKS!

For what it's worth, I wore them once to a fetish party (don't ask!) I decided I didn't want to wear black leather like everyone else so I wore a pair of vintage style boxers (Brooks Brothers' French Backs), a singlet, vintage police boots and black socks and garters. The response --from both genders-- was very enthusiastic! (I am not in any way trying to imply that your partner is a fetishist, this is just my only experience with a large scale response to garters...and it's kind of a funny story)

I remember hearing a story once that if you worked at Microsoft HQ you pretty much had to wear sock garters. Or have excellent elastic in your socks. Either way, your socks could not be around your ankles. I have no idea if this story is accurate, neither do i know if white socks were allowed. On a similar note: I'll bet Howard Hughes had some weird neurosis about socks when you were in his presence!

Surely the military has a similar system (the garters, not the neuroses) for dress uniforms? Maybe one of our current or ex-servicemembers could fill us (me) in?

My dad said in the military all the drill instructors would connect the bottom of their shirts directly to the top of their socks. That way the shirt would be pulled down perfectly tucked in all the time, and the socks would be held up nice and tight. Sounds Efficient to me

Ok Roger, you do know that a sock garter is very much different from a woman’s belt garter right? I’m not so sure you do. A male sock garter is just a strap that sits at the top of the calf and there is one or two straps that will hold to the sock thus, keeping it from falling down. One would only wear them if wearing long pants.

Now, let us talk about white or light colored socks as the original title of the thread sates.

Yeah, only will wear them with sneakers, khakis and saddle shoes. The Microsoft deal? I doubt that a company run the richest man in the world who dresss like a crossing guard would have a dress code regarding socks. Not even Oracle, where Larry Elllison dresses like a man of his wealth has that type of dress code.:cheers1:

Boy, I could have used something like that when I wore bobby-sox in school.

They were knee-high and always falling down (white and color socks) and I tried to secure them with rubber bands -- which either broke or hurt my legs.

Of course, I wore skirts in those days so maybe they would not have been practical.
