White Shoes After Labor Day

In the U.S.A., growing up in the 40's and 50's, little girls did not wear white shoes after Labor Day (first Monday in September). Memorial Day (last Monday in May) , you could wear white shoes again. Is this still true in the US? Is this true in other countries? Is it just for females, or males too? How about other white apparel?
Does anybody care anymore? What cultural restrictions lke this have you experienced?
