Which leather for Aero Barnstormer

Cxl horsehide can crinkle in some places and not in others. I fear that the front of the coat would remain a flat plate for awhile. I had an old 50s French Barnstormer, and even after all the years the front left panel remained stiff. Odd for sitting.

A cxl barnstirner would look great, and if you wore it every day for a few seasons it might start to wear great too. But you don't strike me a one coat kinda guy Jelupe! That said, even with a ton of wear on it'd still be far too heavy for my liking, irrespective of how much it softened.

I have promised myself not to buy another leathet jacket which needs braking in (I currently have 4-5 jackets in process) and then I always get pulled back in by some jacket style that ”must” be heavy leather.

I don't really get the idea that a barnstormee should be "heavy". None of the ones I've seen or handled are specially heavy nor they are very thick when it comes to the leather.

It can get to a point that it would be uncomfortable to wear and you will wear it a few times only. I think it's better to go for a leather that won't make you think twice about picking it to wear on a cold day. After all you can always layer under it.

Yes, I tried to look at it under different light. I tried to twist it and scrub it, but all I see is black.

Hmm... I need to get a sample to play with.
In that case, I would lean towards burgundy / cordovan

Thanks for everybody. I just put in my order for a Barnstormer. After lot of back and forward thinking I decided to go with a hide that was not mentioned here: the oilpull hh. I think this hide is nice compromise and I think and hope it will suite this style as well.

Yeah, I have this pattern going on with hobbies:

Phase 1: get over excited and spend lot’s of money

Phase 2: get bored and forget the hobby


It seems that with jackets I’m still at stage 1.

Phase 3: get over excited with a new hobby while still keeping an eye on your previous hobby for special items

Phase 4 and after: keep adding hobbies

One way or another, it's endless

If I follow this pattern, I still have about 75 jackets to go until phase 3. Considering that I have been mostly buying new (expensive) jackets that means I have to spend 50 000 - 75 000 € to reach next phase.

Just read from old topic that oilpull is not very good at dealing with water. My intention is to use this barnstormer in all sorts of foul weather that finnish autumn/winter/spring throws at me. Maybe I need to still change my order...

Does anyone here have experience on how oilpull reacts to rain? Does it absorb the water as I read from another thread?

If I recall, lacks a top coat, meaning that it absorbs every stain and mark on the go. This means your jacket 'antiques' double-quick, but you have to be very relaxed about the potential for some pretty startling effects on the way to that overall 'aged' look. Aero did recommend it for a Real Deal A-2 to get that 100-mission look.
If not brown, cordovan would be fantastic, but I might be tempted to go with the black-on-brown base. That would age beautifully.

I like the idea of quick aging. However if it means that the leather will soak through after 30 - 60 mins in medium rain, it is not what I need for my coat.

I think that for snow and rain an oil pull is indeed not the best option.
My first aero was a fqhh cxl mariner. It is still one of my favourite jackets.
Two years ago I got a shearling lined fqhh lhb. I specifically asked for a heavy batch of hide and the thickest shearling possible. What I got is a beast, warm, looks killer but quite a task to wear it!
I think that a goatskin would be a better option for you.

Goat is one of my favorite hides. Unfortunately it is not an option for a size 48 Barnstormer. Damn goats are too small for my needs!

After discussing with Holly at Aero, I changed the leather to brown CXFQHH following her suggestion (she didn’t suggest it should be brown).

It seems I will have another jacket to brake in after couple of months.

Living in Finland I'm sure you won't have nuch trouble wearing the Barnstormer for a few months.
