Mr. Potter from It's a Wonderful Life. Who wouldn't want all that money and power?

(Serious answer: George Bailey. Although to this day I find it hard to believe that NOBODY else in town would've dated Mary if George didn't exist; Donna Reed was adorable.)

I'm sure they would have. But there was no other George Bailey available for her.

OK, here it goes. Between my interest in all things deco, and the more masculine dandy in film (later 20's-30s and later) I would have to say that more than Bond and the british spy of the Cold War years, Gaston Monescu from Ernst Lubitsch's Trouble in Paradise (Paramount, 1932) as played by Herbert Marshall is the character that most inspires me. A dandy but still very much masculine who succeeds by his wit and intelligence. His elegance and charm appeals to women, he is a bon vivant, always impecably dressed set in a backdrop of the very modern and urban Art Deco society.

At the time of your post I shamefully admit I had not yet seen this movie. Your discription of Herbert Marshall's character Gaston Monescu intrigued me so much that I had see it. After watching Trouble in Paradise last night (for the second time) I must thank you for introducing me to this wonderful movie. I also find the character of Gaston Monescu inspiring, he embodies my idea of the perfect Golden Era gentleman and scoundrel. :)

I am glad you enjoyed the movie. It is one of the few I own now that I finally purchased a television. I had gone without for several years.

I really do enjoy the gentleman rogue character in film and fiction.

Burt Lancaster as Joe Erron in "Vera Cruz" ruled my formative years. . . .

J.E.: Too bad you never knew Ace Hannah. Shot my old man in a stud poker game when I was just a kid. Ace felt so bad he gave me a home. Ace used to say three things. Never trust anybody you don't have to trust. Never do any favors you don't have to do. Never take any chances you don't have to take.

B.T.: What's that got to do with my savin' your life?

J.E.: Ace lived long enough to know he was right. He lived thirty seconds after I shot him.
