Where to get nice hats?

Currently I have a black wool fadora with a 2-inch brim and about a 4-inch crown with a thin band. It hasn't got any lining but man I love that hat. Its taken just about anything you could throw at it and its still almost as good as the day I bought it! What I'm looking for in a dressier hat is a 3-3 1/2 inch brim with a 5 inch crown and a thick band (with lining). Where would I get one and whats a really durable make? When I buy a hat, trsut me, I wear them!

For a good starter hat, there is always Akubra. Better than most modern Stetsons and all modern Borsalinos.

Otherwise go vintage

HATS DIRECT

Akubra...that looks about to what I want. Although a bit expensive and I'd have to order it online. Hmmm, would there be any stores that carry hats like that in the L.A. area I wonder?
Hats Direct did right by me & their shiping is fast as summer lightning... oh, & the hats are the best value around & tough as nails.

I have several Akubra hats and I have got them all threw http://www.hatsdirect.com/ . I will use this company again and again. Very happy with them. The price is in Australian currency so it is usually cheaper then most American retailers. Even with the shipping and handling tacked on. As for shipping time I usually get them in a few weeks. As far as quality goes you can throw anything at these hats and not worry about them. My oldest one is a "Federation" About five years old now and still holding strong. That's my two cents worth anyway.

Johnny , you are right . As a retailer here in the US ,it's cheaper to buy from a store in Australia than buy it here . Thats why the main distributor in the US gave up importing the hats . It cost too much money .

If you want a nice black one, try Hollywood Hatters on Melrose.

Although it's a tiny shop, the store has a much wider selection than their website indicates. They seem to cater to the Orothodox Jewish community, so if black's your thing, you're in luck. They carry other colors, too, and have about half wool, half fur felt in stock.

I like the joint, myself!

eBay is just so hit and miss, you're at the mercy of which seller has what on hand and puts it up for auction.

With a habedasher, you have the knowledge that he or she will get new stock or re-stock what you seek as long as the hat is still in production. Of course, it may not be vintage, but just in my limited reading here, Akbura is still a good hat right off the shelf.

I'll state the obvious....

Bencraft hats and Miller hats. both have extensive selections and pricing is more than fair. Bencraft's service is superb, perhaps because i live in an adjacent state, but hat arrive withing 48 hours.

I second Hollywood Hatters. Call ahead and make sure Sal is going to be there, I had fantastic service from him. He carries a couple of the Akubras. While there go around the corner to Pinks!
