Hi,
I tend to do it the hard way. I look in the men's hat sections without any search criteria most of the time. Yep, just take sixteen thousand listings, sort by Ending Soonest, and then scroll, and page and scroll and.....well you get the idea!
This is the way to trip up those auctions with screwy titles that hide something actually worthwhile. I usually go for two days worth of listings and stop. I usually have some time in the evenings to sit in the living room with the old notebook and fluff thru things during commercials or sports which aren't doing much at the moment.
Since I got into cleaning and reworking hats, I sometimes do run a search for under $20, using the usual list of vintage brand names. That will eliminate the really nice hats that go for large sums and leave me with the dirty, unwashed and unloved to choose from!
I don't presume that folks listing hats by the brand names can tell if a hat is late model or vintage, so I look thru both the late model and vintage categories. When I find something, I just add it to the old watch list so I can think about it for a bit before bidding.
Most of the time, I feel like an old threshing machine: I sit there chugging along for hours, separating the wheat from the chaff! But, it keeps me out of mischief - most of the time! lol
