I bought an XL fedora around christmas, thinking that my head could not possibly be bigger than 7 5/8... it didn't take me more than 30 seconds of wearing it to realize that the hat cut off a great deal of circulation to my head. I've been searching for some place that sells something larger than XL but i've only seen 2 or 3 XXL fedoras, ever. Does anyone know where i can find a decent selection of XXL fedoras?

Duane & the Fedora Store

Friends to hydrocephalics everywhere...;)
... just kidding, and I thought that I had a hard time at 7 1/2,
I empathize with your struggle. A good 4-way hat stretcher might be a wise buy at sometime in the future...

to my knowledge though, hat stretchers won't really increase the size of the hat, only maintain the current size...right?

EDIT: and Duane, how am i supposed to know that i can call to order something larger than what is listed at the fedora store?

Do a brief search

...here at the Lounge and you will find a plethora of both opinion and information. My personal experience has been that one size is about all an amateur like me can manage without doing major reconstructive surgery. (i.e. without removing sweat and ribbon)
I have done it w/ a hot steaming kettle, a couple of different stretchers and alot of patience. But knock around in here and find out what others have said, there is a wealth of knowledge here.

The items I have listed in this thread are available in large sizes, but I do not list these sizes on the website, because not all of the colors are available in XXL or the larges sizes. Therefore, if you call to order on any of the hats I listed I will be able to tell you the colors I have available. If you have quesitons, leave me a message on the weekend and I will call you back. You can also email me on specific colors on the hats I have listed above, and I will respond by email.

not that it helps any, but wouldn't it be easier if we all wore a 7 or a 7-1/8? So many great old hats seem to be in those sizes.
Oh well.

Good luck on finding something cool that fits!

what exactly is the methodology to using a steaming kettle. the fedora i referred to was felt with a leather band inside. I really don't know much about hats but i thought that using a steaming kettle was only applicable to non-felt hats.

...and doesn't removing the sweatband and ribbon cause the hat to lose its shape?

Stretching

IF you want to stretch a hat you need to use a good tea pot that will produce a sufficient amount of heat to soften the felt around the edge of the hat where the crown and the brim meet. I always suggest to give it as much of a stretch as possible before puttting any steam on it. When you put the steam on it you should be able to hear a suttle creaking in the hat to let you knwo its working. Then I give a little more of a stretch and let it sit for a while. That can give you a litle more than a full size if you are careful and meticulous about it. I know something about it cause I happen tobe an 8 1/8 to and 8 1/4.

In terms of finding hats to fit you you can try http://www.hats-plus.com

By the way this is my first post and I love all teh information that you guys put up here this is a great forum thanx.
