That's fair to say, though there have been a few prominent husband/wife collecting teams in the art world.

And of course Myrtle Young......

It's "handkerchief" in case anyone wants to do a search. (Or start collecting them.) :)

Actually, I dont use hanDkerchiefs at all. I use bandanas for the original intended purpose of a hanky, which I will not mention here and now just in case anyone is eating.

I certainly have the obsessive collector gene. Part of the passion for me though, is the bargain. I'm not one to beat up a seller about their price on something but when I find a useful vintage item which I like at a steal, that's when I pounce. This is how I limit my indulgence: By the price tag. And it would be that way for me even if funds were unlimited. I just love getting a deal on this old stuff as much as I love the old stuff itself. :)

That's the hardest thing for me to resist: a bargain. The largest "collection" I have right now seems to be my fabric stash, and it's a doozy. Most of it was purchased because it was a "great deal". I just need to take a bunch of it to the thrift store before I talk myself out of it: "Well, maybe I could use it one day...ten years from now." :eusa_doh:

My criteria for purchasing is: Can I afford it? Is it practical? (Information sources, like books, can be practical.) And, Can I afford the space?

I have to pass up a lot of neat things because I don't have room for them, and/or they'd just languish in my closet being useless. If I had a massive closet, I'd probably be an avid collector of coats and outerwear, but that wouldn't be a practical collection. You only need so many coats. So I have one fancy winter coat and one raincoat. I'm in the market for another raincoat right now, but I just have to grit my teeth and move along when I see a cute winter coat!

The greatest collections - art collected by rich stylish people possibly excepted - aren't built on passions, but obsessions. A passion is an obsession polite society admires - an obsession is a passion they don't.

I believe that the greatest collectors are almost always male, both for their intense competitiveness and their purer, more abstract relationship to objects.

Hello Fletch,

I cannot agree with that. The history is filled up with great female collectors:

- Catherine the Great (and I am not talking about her lovers...): she was the steam engine behind the "Hermitage", Madame de Pompadour, Madame Du Barry, Queen Charlotte, Marie Feodorovna...

Closer to our era:
- Lady Dorothy Nevill, Lady Schreiber, A. de Rothshild, Isabella S. Gardner , Mrs Palmer..

Today:

-Michèle Berthet-Aittouarès, Denise Cadé, Patricia Dorfmann, Thessa Herold...

I don't want to bore you with a longer list, but we have a lot of great women amongst the best collectors.

Even here, a Lady earlier mentioned that she collected perfumes. Collecting scents: How fascinating is that? And how more abstract could it be?

I believe that many women are more in touch with their sensitivity and their intuition, which is an important facet of a great collector...

Thank you for the opportunity of a good discussion...

In my case is very simple. When the desire is gone, when the interest is gone, i stop. It all comes in a very natural way, like autumn follows summer so to speak.
I used to colllect perfumes, but now i only like a few and i stick to them.

I definitely collect like this. It it not even about value sometimes. I have collected and sold collections I have collected. It is something about rounding up things for me. As a neat freak that is alot better I just like putting stuff back together.
For instance recently I have started picking up tiny pottery vases. I now have 5 in a window. They have such great form. I had to have an uneven number. My longest running thing I am looking for is an Art Deco glass used for cigarettes. I first bought an amber ashtray, then I found the same design of glass in a box that has 2 compartments that the small ashtray sits in. The thing is it is a gorgeous olive green color. It also has a pineapple on top of the box. So I now need to find 2 green ashtrays to fit in the green box and 1 amber ashtry and the amber box to fit them in. [huh]
This is how I have always collected. Finding a top to go with the bottom etc. Finding the best linen without damage etc.
When I get the things all together then I am able to present them. Sort of like forming my own show and opening night. I know it is odd.
I just happen to have a good eye and even surprise myself with some of the finds I run across. It is a blessing. It is about beauty to me. I find such beauty in some objects and always think of vessels as different people.
Some things that are worth a ton of money some people would not look twice at. Just like people to me. Hidden treasures to be found in objects and people. Same thing to me.

Clearly, my attempt at humor and subtlety was not fully appreciated.

It is unfortunate that you chose treat my spiritual belief in such a manner that is clearly insulting and smacks of bigotry. If I had spoken of Christian, Judaic or another form of spirituality and you posted in such a manner it would have been clear and I am sure not tolerated.

The Fedora Lounge is a very nice place with very nice people.

Carlisle,

I never intended any insult. I was serious when I said that I am very interested in Native American culture. I love the Navajo tradition, culture and all the different art forms related to it. I have some rare and very nice piece of Navajo jewelry that I cherish.

I am genuinely interested to find out about your NA name, and the story behind it, as well as the content of your collection and your interest towards it.

The post regarding my name was only written to break the ice. The only subject of my sarcasm was myself.

I am from a different culture than you are. I spent time in Europe, in the US, and in Africa. I always consider myself as a host in every country I lived in, I am most respectful of anybody's belief, tradition and culture, and I would never intentionally try to be hurtful towards you, your beliefs or your values.

So if I did, please accept my apology.

Warm regards,

JL. P

Thank you ...

As far as my name is concerned possibly in time...it is very special to me in
that it was given to me by an Elder whom I admired and her memory I cherish. :)

You are welcome.

Today, with the communication tools that we have, it is sometimes easy to forget that time is the essential ingredient to trust and friendship …

Have a great evening.

Regarding my own collecting whims, my yardstick measures two intangibles; guilt and reality.........or something like that.
