What's the Best/Worst Advice Your Parents Gave You?

So much, but I cannot remenber most of it, which means I am doomed. A few things I do recall.

My mother said about dating girls, "If they are interested they won't play hard to get", That was good advice and saved me from making a fool of myself.

She also said avoid 'loose girls' and sitting in a draft. When I was single I did some wonderful things sitting in a draft with a 'loose girl'.

Can't remember any of my fathers advice other than he was the one who would tell us off, the 'wait till your father gets home' sceario. I have really tried to avoid this with my children, but I keep saying things to my children which my parents would say to me.

HELP I am becoming my Dad.

Best Advice from BFF: It's your life, if you are unhappy get in the driver's seat and drive your own car, stop being a passenger in your life.

Dad: When you are driving and you hear a strange noise in your car, do NOT turn the radio up louder so you cant' hear it. Drive it to the dealership and get it checked out. (This being said after I had been driving with no brakes for probably a few weeks)

Mom: You may hate your sisters/family now (say as a 15 yr old) but don't burn your bridges, they are the only one who will be there for you when you really need them. So far she pretty much has been right even though we are not the closest.

Advice from Mom.
"Don't make the same mistakes I did."
"Make sure he loves you more."

Advice from my grandmother when I was 5 years old.
"If a stranger grabs you, kicks him right between the legs and run."

Advice from my Uncle Lou before I was age 10
"Don't take wooden nickels."
(after he asked me to walk on his back saying he would give me a tip.)

edit:
Best advice from my roommate:
"Leap and the net will appear"

Best from Dad: Get an education, it's the only thing no one can take away from you.

Worst from father in law: It matters more to me that you be close to God (whatever the hell that actually means) than that you finish your PhD or have that baby.

I stopped talking to the father in law after that.

The worst came from my father after I'd quit my umpteenth Jill job in my late-teens, early-twenties: "Sometimes you've got to work where you don't want to work because you have to pay the bills. I've spent 20 years at my job and hated it, but that's what you have to do! You have to be dependable!" He got laid off about a year later because he was too old and making too much.

After that, he moved to Florida and bounced from job to job every couple years or so until he retired last year. He says now that he should have never told me that.

Best advice then came from him later on: "Find a job you love. If it takes a few tries, it's worth it later. Otherwise, you spend half your life working and the other half dreading going to work. There's nothing left for anything else."

A few I recall..

Grandmother when I was a boy: Get up off that cold (stone) step, it will give you piles. (Haemorrhoids). She was right.

Grandfather (who was an antiquarian book dealer) when I was a small boy after he had caught me doodling in a book: Books are silent friends. He was right.

Father when I was an older boy: Think before you leap. I still remember that each time I have an important decision to make.

Father when I was a young chap getting out and about in the world ....and discovering girls: There are plenty more fish in the sea. He was right.

My dentist: Now this won't hurt a bit :eusa_doh:

Dad: If you don't know how to do it, find a book and figure out how.

Dad again: Anything worth doing absolutely has to be done yourself.

(The result of this last is, unfortunately, that a lot of important things simply don't get done.)

My Dad said "Kiss all the girls you can, even the ugly one's, because when your too old for that stuff, its the one's you could have kissed that you'll think about." Not sure if its true either but I sure 'kissed' a few girls just in case.

"This is going to hurt me as much as you!" Er no its not!

"Just wait until you have kids!" True.

Are you counting this as good or bad advice, mate?

The best from my Dad: "Don't make me pull this car over." (to all three kids in the backseat)
The best from my Mom: "Don't make your Father pull this car over."

The worst came from my Grandfather: "If you light the end of that splinter, it'll come right out from under your fingernail." (I only followed this advice ONCE!) :(

On Drama: Don't go looking for trouble, It will find you plenty soon enough without any help

On Fear, panic, etc: First, figure you've had it, now calm down and look and think. Do what you can to improve your position.

There's more.
