Also does anyone here wear vintage on a daily basis to work etcetera or with modern skirts and dresses? My wife is very shy when it comes to people seeing the tops of her stockings or garters under todays shorter fashions?

Mike & mona

Wish I could help you, Mike. I've got bird legs, so I always end up going down a size.

As far as wearing them daily, I do, however all of my skirts hit me at least the knee, so no garter flashing. I've got long legs though so any skirt shorter looks like I stole it from the children's department.

I know there are women on here that have more ample legs than I do, and hopefully they're reading this and typing you some advice right away. If you haven't done so already, there is a thread on seamed stockings that might be able to answer your question if you wade through it.

Good luck!

Hey ladies, does anyone here know where to buy heavy weight *stockings*? I'm talking opaque, winter weight "tights" that are stockings, 50 denier or above. The caveat is that they can't cost $15/pair! Also, I'm looking for work-wear, not Fully Fashioned...

Thanks :)

I buy George brand nude opaque tights from WalMart. They keep my legs nice and warm, last for months with minimal fuss and run somewhere about $5/pair IIRC.

Thank you both for your input on the stockings and tights. I will certainly check out that thread on stockings. My wife used to wear them daily under scrubs when working but after she gave birth to our daughter we kind of got away from wearing them as well as her girdles and stockings.

I met a young lady last week in a local Meijer store who was dressed in vintage attire with vintage style hair and make-up. She was the one who mentioned this site to me after i told her how much I loved her hair and make-up. I wish I would have had more time to ask her about her wardrobe but it was kind of one of those awkward moments and I did not want her to get the wrong idea. However, now my mind is dying to know if she dresses like that daily or if it was for a special event etcetera. Perhaps I will never know.

Helysounce I noticed that you are from Columbus and was wandering if you might be able to help us find events for us to attend and meet others?

Merry Christmas.

Bra Sizing

I have a question about bra sizing. For the past few years now I have bought most all my wifes underwear and bras. Most of the time I buy either vintage style bras from ebay or the ones from the lingerie department by equisite form or playtex that come in boxes. I have a female friend who says they look ugly and our old lady's bras. Regardles they tend to give my wife more lift and more of a vintage pointy silouhette under her clothing. In the box type bras she ussually wears something like 44B or 42C but recently she was fitted at Cacique and her size in thier modern underire bra is a 40DD??? Does anyone know why her size is so different? Her breasts are not as full as she has had several kids.

Does anyone else here buy these "Ugly" boxed bras and is their a better alternative for a plus sized Lady? A few years ago we went to an old time corset shop in Chicago and they had some really interesting semi custom bras that are made to have the cups tailored to fit the individual. I can not remember the name of the bra maker but they were very expensive and did have a vintage look. Does anyone know of the bra that I am talking about and if they are still made.

Hey! I buy those 'old lady' Playtex box bras. As far as the sizing, most women, about 80% if I recall correctly, wear the wrong bra size. See if you can find her an 'old lady' bra in the new size and see if it fits her better. 40DD would be a common size.. unlike my 30DD which means I have to get all of mine altered. Worth it though.

Another thought to consider is that most cup sizes in modern bras are rounded and designed to push up and together. Vintage styles and 'old lady' bras is all about lifting and separating, as well as having a more conical shape cup. These factors could all influence the end bra size.

As far as better options, I'm not a plus size but when you've got such a great option readily available I would stick with it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? My mom who IS plus size has been wearing Playtex and Goddess Bras for as long as I can remember wouldn't change for the world.

First of all, all bras fit differently, just as different brands of clothing fit differently (I may be a size 8 in some modern clothes, and a size 12 in others)! Her size will in part depend on the style, cut and brand of the bra.

It's also important to note that band size and cup size are proportional - the DD cup on a band size 40 bra will be smaller than the DD cup on a 42 or 44 band size bra. Often, if one bra doesn't fit, going up or down a band or cup size will help - for example, as you noted, if a 44B doesn't quite fit, a 42C might, because the B cup on that 44 will be slightly larger/fuller than the B cup on that 42. Does that make sense?

I know there's no exact science to it. The best thing is to have the oldest lady you can find fit her, and to get refit on a yearly basis, because even small weight changes can change your bra size.

As for the pointy, "old lady" bras, I say she should wear what makes her feel and look good. THAT is what's most important as far as undergarments are concerned! I personally don't wear them, not because I don't like them, but because they just don't fit me properly. That said, it may be worth having her try something else to see if she likes it better - you never know!

I love it that m_lamb99 is so knowledgeable about, and actually buys his wife's intimates! That is sweet! Wish mine would do the same.

This is the kind of manly input we like in the Powder Room. :eusa_clap

Agreed. I'm still reeling from my husband throwing my garter belt in the dryer and melting all the garter clips.... :eusa_doh:

It was. If I hadn't laughed, I would have sobbed. I've ordered new clips, but still... it's the rule of "Anything not SEEN is not DRIED!" I about beat him with it, melted clips and all.

Thank you all for the kind comments. I am glad you appreciate my being here as I was a little bit nervous at first how it might be percieved in a room dedicated more to just ladies talk. Heck I still get looks and comments on occassion when I join my wife in the dressingroom to help her with cloths and bras. Even though each room has a door and 4 wall I think some might be afraid you might see them.

As for the question about the bras I appreciate your help kitty. I too thought that each style and each maker can and often does fit differently. The lady who was fitting my wife before Christmas got rather upset when I kept suggesting that she try a different size. She asked me what I was trying to achieve because her size is a 40DD and that is what she should wear. However, she did not know that i had already ordered the same bra in the size that I wanted her to try on and that it was to be a Christmas present.

I really love buying my wife lingerie but unfortunately she works in a hospital and does not have the opportunity to wear nice stuff regularly. I also do not think she appreciates the fact that I do buy her nice stuff like you ladies do but then that is mostly because she does not like her body and deos not see herself the way I see her. I also buy her shoes and other vintage items whenever I can.

For the record though I do not think the boxed bras look at all like "old Lady Bras". I think these offer great support and like you say are designed to seperate and project the breasts in a form more reminiscent of the 40's. I only wish that my wife could find more vintage style clothes to compliment that shape.

Thanks again for all your kind words and Have a Happy New Year.

Just in case you ladies didn't know, What Katie Did are having their sale at the moment, saw it on my Twitter feed a few days ago. I would love to go and spend some money at it that's for sure!

I have a feeling that it is only in store and not online yet, so this is mainly for other UK ladies.

I'm eyeing up a girdle and corselette from them!

I really love SIL stuff, but their bras just do not fit me at all.

Also, I really hate how they pass off Rago items as their own, at higher prices.

I wear 40s vintage. My favorite box bra is the basic Playtex cross your heart bra. No underwire but it does give adequate support (I'm a 36DDD normally in "modern/fancy" brassieres), and it gives that great 1940s bust profile. I wear the Rago long line long leg girdle too. I can get you the style numbers for both if you are interested. A couple of good pics showing the 40s silhouette.
