I made Salade de Chevre Chaud (a Harry Eastwood recipe) the other night - my first time making it - very simple with not too many ingredients. My enthusiasm waned ever so slightly when I opened the lettuce I bought - I saw a couple of tiny spiders escaping and running all over my countertop - I pulled away another leaf and it was like an army of baby spiders marching out, a kind of silvery cocoon was stuck on one of the leaves, and then to top it off a huge spider (the Mammy Spider I guess) fell out onto the floor - my husband picked her up and put her out in the garden. He ended up going up to the shop and getting another lettuce. I shiver even thinking about it - not a big fan of our arachnid friends......anyway, the meal was delicious !

Tonight I'm going to make Hake with Clams, Asparagus, Peas & Parsley (or Merluza a la Koxkera if you are from the Basque Country!) - a Rick Stein recipe.

Vera - I had a feeling I wouldn't be alone on this one! The whole thing really grossed me out - I don't mind the odd tiny spider (they're quite cute) but having loads of them scuttling about *shiver*!!!!!!!!!

Tonight's dinner was roast pork and crackling, with rice :) Simple, but delicious.

Outside of the U.S., most of you are fortunate enough to not be aware/affected by the "chips" craze.
In the U.S., we have had chocolate chips for generations. Small, kind of cone-shaped pieces of rather poor-quality chocolate. But good for baking. Probably the most famous recipe was the "Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie" recipe.
An number of yours ago, some of the companies decided to try other 'flavours". So we got little cone-shaped (and perfectly-formed, I should add) butterscotch-flavoured pieces. And peanutbutter-flavoured. And mint-flavoured (in both red and green around Christmas time). And even white-chocolate-flavoured. (and I am sure I have missed some of the odd-balls).

So, while we wait for Ms. Godfrey to provide her recipe, I hope you appreciate the background.

While I do make a pretty good butterscotch cookie from the recipe on the bag of butterscotch flavored chips, these come from my 1942 Modern Family Cook Book.

Butterscotch Cookies

3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp soda
3/4 cup shortening (half butter)
2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp vanilla
3 Tbsp evaporated milk
1 cup chopped nuts
1 cup dates, chopped (which I will omit)

Sift flour, measure, and resift twice with cream of tartar and soda. cream shortening, blend in sugar, and add egg, vanilla and milk; beat until smooth and fluffy. Add flour mixture and stir until flour disappears. Stir in nuts and dates. Shape in a roll, or divide in 2 or 3 portions and roll separately; wrap in waxed paper and chill in refrigerator overnight. Slice thin with a very sharp knife, and transfer to baking sheet. Bake in a moderately hot oven (400) about 7 minutes, or until nicely browned. Remove to cake racks to cook. Makes about 5 dozen cookies, depending on diameter and thickness.

Last night we picked up dinner from a local gourmet grocer: caesar salad, cherry tomato & fresh mozzarella salad, couscous with sundried tomatoes & olives, rice pilaf, breaded chicken cutlets, and parmesan foccacia bread. Delicious, with good wine.

Left-overs from dinner last night - kufteh-inspired ground lamb, baba ganoush and brown rice/lentil salad with cumin. Possibly I'll go crossover and wrap it in tortilla bread. I'm definitely going to have a Corona anyway. With lime.
