What would your name be? (Gents too!)

My parents almost named me Dorothy and would have called me Dottie. Now that sounds pretty old fashioned.

Social Security has a great source for looking up popular names of any year. Unfortunately it shows that all my favorite girl names have become very popular. I like Emma (for my great aunt who died of TB in her 30s), Grace (Grace Kelly and Gracie Allen) and Olivia (after my great-grandmother Olive) but they are all in the top 20 right now.

I have long loved variations on Lillian (my grandmother's name) and was thinking of Lily Ann because my mother and I both have Ann as our middle name. Unfortunately that would make a daughter Lily Gildner
Opinions? Do you automatically think "gilded lily" when you see that? Or is that phrase so old, no one will think of it.

Daughters: Mercedes and Nova (I'm really not joking).

My mothers maiden name is Washburn. Which doesn't make for a very good porn name.

But it does tie in with the theme names. My husband plays guitar. We joke our kids will be Gibson, Gretschen and Rick(enbacker). : D

While searching for names for my sister's new puppy, I came across this neat site which shows the popularity and rank of names from the 1880s-2004. Of course, my name was number 3 in the 1980s--and number 461 in the 1940s!

I have heard there are a few stories circulating as to how the Margarita got its name. The one I recall was this story:

There was a bartender in Mexico who had a girlfriend who entertained at the same bar. One night, there was an altercation that she got caught up in, some shots were fired and she was killed.

He mourned over her and later, mixed a new drink and named it after her in her honor: Margarita.

Anyone hear a different story than that?

My name is relatively modern - my mother picked it from Colleen McCullough's novel "The Thorn Birds".

I'd like a vintagey name like Joy (my middle name, & my Nana's name) or Charlotte, Virginia, or Adelaide, but I'm sure I would have been a Betty.

My vintage name is Marloes, typically Dutch.
