A 1966 Plymouth Valiant Convertible. My grandfather worked for Chrysler and got this for my Grandmother, but realized it was to much car for her to handle. My Dad then got it and then my sister and I got when we were old enough to drive. The wiring harness went out on it and then it went to my uncle. It was a great car to drive.
I drive this now.

My dad told me if I did OK in college he would let me order a car. So after studying my life away, I was trying to figure what I could get, or what he would let me get. My older brother was 4 years older than me ann was married in the Air Force, and had bought a new Pontiac compact car with a so called GTO package.

So in Jan '65 I went down to the local Pontiac dealer and they me drive a new '65 GTO. I was hooked. I told my dad this is the car I wanted, he probably had no idea what a powerful car this was. In May 1965 I ordered my car from Pontiac, a 1965 Tempest with the GTO option. Burgundy, black interior, 4 speed Muncie transmission, Hurst shifter, 360 HP/ 389 cu in engine, with 3 two barrel carburetors, positraction, quick steering. I remember picking up my girlfriend the day I picked up the car. This started my life-long enamoration with cars. Sadly, Pontiac is no more.

I was always a motorcycle guy and didn't get a car until I was a couple of years out of high school. It was probably in 1974 when i got my first car, a 66 Ford Mustang coupe, with a v8 and four speed. Think I paid a couple of hundred dollars for it. Not a bad car but it was what my Dad wanted me to get. He knew that I liked big, big cars and said that they were for old men so I should get something sporty, like the Mustang. I drove that car for several months and then I saw a 64 Cadillac series 62 convertible on a used car lot. It was gold with a tan top and was in pretty good condition. I paid the princely sum of 240.00, all fees included, and brought the car home and parked it across the street. Later when my Dad and I went outside I pointed out the car and asked him what he thought about it. He didn't know that it was mine, and said it was pretty nice. When I told him it was mine he just told me I was crazy but he wasn't mad. I sold that Mustang in a week. My Dad didn't understand why I liked the cars I did, but I know he got a kick out of the different old cars and sports cars I would drive.

I'd have to resign myself to surviving on breakfast cereal for a long, long time (.....but it would be so worth it!;))

My dad bought one of these for my mom, somewhere around 2003-05. It was her work commuter, but still big enough to get kids in it. She drove it up until last year when my dad bought a 92 Silverado 2500 with a snowplow for our driveways, she fell in love with it and left my dad with the TrailBlazer. He was mortified, having to drive a 'woman's car' and ended up falling in love with it.

Last year, my truck went into the shop and I borrowed the TrailBlazer for a few days. I was mortified, having to drive the 'woman's car' I mocked my dad for driving, and ended up falling in love with it. I didn't wanna give it back!

My own "real" first car is a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer (build year 2001). I have no plans to replace it, it's paid for.

The old V8's with three deuces are so cool!

At the time, my dad had a 66 Pontiac Catalina, 421 with three 2-barrels, low restriction dual exhaust, a numerically-high limited slip rear end, the whole works. It was nominally rated at 376 HP, but was probably closer to 500 in reality -- faster than stink, and a real two-fisted drinker of gasoline!

I really enjoyed this story. How cool to go home with a new GTO!

This reminds me so much of my father and I. He's big into muscle cars and trucks. All through high school, I drove big four door boats from the 50's, 60's, and 70's and a couple old Crown Vic's.

I've been dying to buy a Cadillac and my dad's just sickened at the thought of it. He says I need to stop buying old man cars.

1967 Mustang Coupe, 289-2bbl c-4 automatic. I loved that car and wish I never got rid of it. Bought it when I was stationed in Tustin CA. Drove it to the beach and up to Tioga Pass in Yosemite (just shy of 10,000 ft). Drove it from LA to Boston and the only trouble I had was a shot wheel bearing in Tucumcari NM. Other than that it never skipped a beat. And when you started her, there was no cranking involved. You just had to touch the starter and she'd fire up. Same with shutting her down. Turn the key off and she was off. No running down to a stop, it just shut down NOW.

Sheesh! I'm gushing about her I know but she was a great car. Her build date was January 18, 1967, about 2.5 months after I was born.

I've got some pics of her somewhere but I haven't scanned them in yet. She was very close in apperance to this one:

I remember the Capri. Over here it was the Mercury Capri. Quite the sexy car for the time.

A car that I always thought of in the same breath was the Opel GT. I wanted one of those really badly. Never had one, though.

First was a 1961 Rambler Metropolitan with an Austin engine. The fly wheel had a hub that accommodated a crank but no access to it through the radiator. However you could access the cold beer in the trunk through the back seat hatch. Tube radio so you had to wait for the warm up. Several since but still my favorite.

What would the 1954 Jaguar XK140 MC drop head coupe be worth now? Or ANY of those cars! If only one had the money and space.....!
The Jaguar would probably be worth something around $90-$100k, a lot more than the $500 I paid for it way back when...

Mine was Powder Blue. I called it a Gutlass because it had no power. It could barely get out of its own way.
