The first episode of I am the Night on TNT last night. Better than I expected and worth a continued viewing.
Ripper Street season 4. I enjoy this show but I'm not sure how good it is. It's a little safe and genteel but I like the principle cast a lot. Guilty pleasure, perhaps.
I thoroughly enjoyed Ripper Street, and looking forward to owning the entire series. Safe is not a word I'd use to describe it. My wife and daughters love Murdoch Mysteries. Compared to Ripper Street, that's like watching knitting.
I guess I found Season 4 a little diffuse in the writing and it pulled it's punches. But I still had fun.
Without giving away spoilers, is that the season where Reid is focussing on his daughter's history? I am a couple of years away from finishing the series, so season details are hazy.
No, it's not that season. It's more about Long Susan.
We are catching our girls up on Supernatural, while the wife and I continue with season 14 (!!!!!). Now up to season five, four episodes in. Haven't seen these in ages, great to pull out the dvds and go to town!
We watched the season finales of
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel - To enjoy this show, you have to accept that it's not going for realism, but for a stylized look at a slice of life in the late '50s / early '60s. The clothes, cars and architecture are all period perfect (or more than perfect as the period probably never looked this good), the characters are exaggerated and the problems both extreme but controlled. And all of this is done in and acting and directing style just shy of frenetic with dialogue shot out of gatling gun. If you accept all that - and we do - the show is a crazy fun romp. Can't wait for season three.
The Man in the High Castle - While the show lost a step this season as the storylines were less tight, the directing inconsistent and the characters more superficial - it is still better than most shows and, at its best (like the season finale) it can deeply engage you in its overarching view of a post-AXIS-victory world wrapped inside a sci-fi multiple-timeline mystery. Plus the acting of Alexa Davalos as Julian Crane, Rufus Sewell (why is his career not even bigger?) as John Smith and Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa as the Japanese Trade Minister makes the show worth watching even if the overall quality has slipped a bit. Onward to season four.
Gotcha now. I don't mind back story, but I agree, if it becomes the focus for too long it can drag the show, slow it down. What we enjoy about Supernatural is that they do an episode here and there, or a short three episode arc for background as/when required. it would stink if they did an entire season of it.
Damn, I was looking forward to its redemption after the Season 2 debacle.True Detective. Eh. It's beautifully shot and acted, but halfway in, this season isn't doing it for me.
The first season was flat-out brilliant. The second was a mess... But you know, for everything it did wrong, it was very ambitious, with several central characters (at least five) given a lot of story, and an urban crime setting and plot quite different from the small town murders of the first.
This new season tries to course-correct by going back to the first season's M.O.: Two detectives investigating a small town crime in three different timeframes, intercut for maximum pretentiousness and confusion. But so far, only one of the detectives has been given any focus/depth/story. Some of the dialog has been painfully on the nose; some of the alleged surprises have been clearly telegraphed. It's just barely holding my interest, mainly for Mahershala Ali's performance.
With so much other worthwhile stuff out there, I can't recommend it...
I enjoyed Supernatural it had some of the best production design I've seen on TV. I lost interest during season 6 or 7, I think. Did it pick up again? It's still going, right?
I'm REALLY disappointed in the current season. It's missing so much...the writing is bad, the plot is bad, and lots of times, the acting is bad. I'm thinking they need to pull the plug on this. How much longer can they keep this up?
