What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Last saw two movies, one Golden Era: watched Key Largo with my mother, who enjoyed it, especially Edward G. Robinson and Claire Trevor. She is not enamoured with either Bogart or Bacall, but then there's no accounting for taste. She was, in her day, a Clark Gable fan, so thought Bogie to be a bit small and scrawny.

This weekend, we watched Copenhagen, a movie that takes place during the early years of WW II but has a modern setting, also, where the "ghosts" of the past discuss what happened between them. I'd seen it two years ago, did not see the stage play. Mother seemed to enjoy it, though I think some of the talk of nuclear fission went over her head (and mine). I got a lot more out of it on the second sitting, though, the movie is pretty heady and thought-provoking.

It is a true story of the last meeting of two great nuclear physicists, one a German and one Danish (Heisenberg and Bors) and the author's conjecture as to what they may have discussed that caused the two of them to part forever as friends and colleagues. A third person, the liaison with the audience, is Bor's wife.

Fascinating, but not your standard popcorn-eating Friday night entertainment.

Last evening I watched 'Far From Heaven,' a 2002 film starring Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid. Set in 1957, they are a picture-perfect Father Knows Best-type family with some dark secrets (the husband is really gay and the wife has become a close friend of a black man...very 1950s taboo). Julianne is so sweet (but she's sweet in any role she plays...even as a porn star in 'Boogie Nights). The only think I didn't like were that the period sets were a bit over-blown. I could tell that automobiles used were the best and rarest of late-1950s vintage (probably from a vintage car club). There weren't any plain model cars. Still, it's a decent film to watch.

"The Punisher" on Friday and "Man On Fire" Saturaday night.

Both good movies, though "Man On Fire" is probably my favorite. Not just for violence/shoot 'em up scenes but for the relationship between Creasy and the little girl and his sense of duty that drives him to seek justice as a vigilante. The belief of giving one life for another strikes a chord with me as well.

Last Golden Era: "Dead End," with a very young Humphrey Bogart. It was on sale at the local Borders for 10 bucks. Great movie!

That's one of my favorite films! The first time I watched it, I was concerned with the one-location theatrical feel about it, but by the end all my concerns had evaporated.


The last movie I watched was Elvis in Viva Las Vegas. I'm going to Vegas in two weeks, so I decided to gear up by seeing what Vegas *used* to look like.

Last film I saw at the cinema was probably Sahara, based on the far better book by Clive Cussler. Decent actors and a good soundtrack, but Mr Cussler was still not happy!

Last DVD I watched was the Bourne Identity. I am waiting for all 3 Bourne films to come out on DVD for a back-to-back viewing session.

We joined the Amazon DVD rental service and recieved our first film, Captain Blood, in the post this week. We shall watch it tonight!

Also I would like to watch the Princess Bride again as the missus has the book and is re-reading it, and thoroughly enjoying it. I did not realise how many film scripts William Goldman wrote until I saw the list at the front of the novel. "I am Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die!" is now an in-joke as is "Snakes, why did it have to be snakes!" and "Goodbye, Dr Jones! Mwahahahaha!"

I watched that movie a few nights ago, it was horrendous.

The last movie I watched was "It Happened One Night" with Clark Gable. This was the picture which spawned my obsession with Mr Gable, it's so funny.

That's my latest as well, and in summary, I'll just say I stayed up through 2:30 A.M. to watch it, and it was worth it. Robert Donat gives such a beautifully understated performance, and the whole movie is just wonderful.

I've always wanted to watch it because, growing up; my father always called me Mr. Chips.
My nickname as a kid was Chip. My older brother is named Dale and apparently he didn't want a little brother, but rather a chipmunk...but that's another story.
What struck me most about the movie (Goodbye Mr. Chips) was the incredible building that was the school. Magnificent!

Worse than I thought it could be; about the best I can say is that London looked lovely. Not even my beloved David Thewlis could salvage this dog (I hope he got a big fat paycheck!).

Just finished watching The Apostle. Good premise but way too much dialog with preaching instead of the storyline. The character never got off the ground. This had the potential to be a great movie but the story and character never grew after the first few scenes.

and since i hate going to bed unsettled, i watched nacho libre for a good laugh.

i do recommend babel to anyone who hasn't seen it.

I watched 'Stay' (2005) with Ewan Mcgregor. I'm going to have to watch it again to figure out what the heck was going on. Although he looks good wearing it, McGregor's wardrobe was all Thom Browne....not exactly my taste.

Atonement

I saw this today, amazing photography. It was beautiful and incredibly moving. Also it is one of my favourite books.. and they didn't ruin it!!!!

Mrs. Minniver. It's one of my alltime favorites. The opening with Greer Garson in a quandry over a hat is classic.

The Painted Veil with Edward Norton and Naomi Watts.

This one got mixed reviews from my friends, but I liked it alot. Lyrical pace, gorgeous scenery and nice character development. I wanted to cheer during the last scene, which I didn't expect.

Edward Norton is one of those actors who I'll watch pretty much anything he's done; I like him alot. His accent does slip in this one but I'll cut him some slack.

Nice 1920's fashions too.

I watched The Godfather with my 14-year-old daughter the other night. (I had shown it to her before, a few years ago when she was too young to really understand it. What's more, that was just a crummy videotape off of AMC - now I've got the DVD.) She agreed that it was a fascinating, compelling masterpiece. No doubt we'll be watching Part II very soon...

I've lost count of how many times I've seen it since the first time, in a decaying local movie palace in its original release, when I was 17!
