I was at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (UK) on Sunday and found in the shop "Target for Tonight" I was 1/2 way through watching it before Mrs D got bored and we had to watch something else.

Tonight she is out and once the kiddy wigs are tucked up in bed, its showtime!

We're screening the Oscar-nominated short subjects this week, in two programs -- one featuring the animated nominees and the second the live action shorts. I projected the animated shorts at this afternoon's matinee, and whoooooeeeeee. Some mighty eye-popping stuff, including a couple of puppettoon-type films that seem to have been done with actual puppets instead of CGI. One, by the National Film Board of Canada, has some vintage interest -- it features a very shy woman in '20s style clothing on board what can only be described as the Sleeper Train To Hell. The other is a Russian/Polish visualization of "Peter and the Wolf" which sets the story in a derelict section of a post-Soviet city.

The drawn shorts have some interesting highlights too -- one is set to a tape recording of an interview of John Lennon, conducted in 1969 by the then-fourteen-year-old director of the film. Another, probably the best of the bunch, is a bittersweet Czarist Russia-era love story done in a pontillated style that looks like impressionist paintings come to life.

These are playing for a limited time, in limited release. If they're showing in your town, *go see them.*

Just saw Where The Sidewalk Ends last night... Yep, you people were right, it was a damn good noir movie. Dana Andrews was great as the tough guy copper. Lotsa hat scenes too Any more Dana Andrews movie recommendations?

It's definitely not noir and it's not a western or war flick, but it's one of my favorite Dana Andrews films of all time - State Fair with Jeanne Crain. It's such a feel-good movie that I save it for the occasions when I'm feeling a bit down.

I'm watching "Kiss Me Deadly" tonight. Mickey Spillane's "Mike Hammer" is the main character. Good stuff....

I just finished this movie. It was very cool and actually has a sci-fi type ending. Check this one out if you can find it.

A masterpiece, and endlessly re-watchable because there is so much going in it; it's a rich, dense movie, a feast of implications. Jack Shadoian has a brilliant chapter on Kiss Me Deadly in his book Dreams and Dead Ends.

Such a fun, good movie! I really think it's a movie that everyone can/should enjoy. Eye-catching graphics, a super-dork of a villain, a CGI family with a better family dynamic than even most "real life" movies, lots of memorable moments/quotes, and a fitting and awesome soundtrack. What more do you need, really? I love this movie everytime I see it, and last night was no exception.

Such a fun, good movie! I really think it's a movie that everyone can/should enjoy. Eye-catching graphics, a super-dork of a villain, a CGI family with a better family dynamic than even most "real life" movies, lots of memorable moments/quotes, and a fitting and awesome soundtrack. What more do you need, really? I love this movie everytime I see it, and last night was no exception.

Brad Bird, the writer/director of The Incredibles, did a fascinating job with this film. In fact, his other films - The Iron Giant and Ratatouille, have been equally wonderful. There is a heart and soul to them that is sometimes missing from other animated films. My daughter loves them all and of course has watched them over and over again (thank goodness for DVDs!)
