What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Saw House of Dracula (1945, Universal) again. It really isn't better after repeated viewings (as is Son of Dracula), and I don't really care of John Carradine as the count. The script is also 2nd rate, and most of the sets have been re-treaded too many times. As far as the rest of the cast, it's nice to see Lionel Atwill as a police inspector again, but he can't match the first time he essayed the role in Son of Frankenstein, wooden arm and all. Onslow Stevens is okay as "the scientist" who turns evil at night, but an actor like George Zucco would have been better, complete with crackling-voiced rants and bulging eyes. Even as a hunchback, Jane Addams is cute, and Martha O'Driscoll is a stunner when she wears her hair down. Glenn Strange hardly has any footage as the Monster, perhaps mercifully so. It is good to see Lon Chaney, though, playing that role that he made his own, although there is no explanation as to how he came back from the dead after House of Frankenstein. (After viewing this, I had to watch Chaney's opening scenes in A&C Meet Frankenstein, just to see him again in his dark suit, shirt, and light tie; great color combo on Lawrence Talbot.)
One can't argue with Martha: :eyebrows:

I love that movie...

Yesterday we went to town and bought a few DVDs so we watched Spiderman3, which was for my son... not bad at all, and enjoyed the Toby Maguire trilogy as a whole.

Then last we night watched Super 8 which was a perfect, post dinner, with a few drinks, Saturday-night-in watch.

Contrary to the horrible reviews, I thought it was fairly good. I quite liked it.

I nearly grabbed this on disc yesterday, as it was only four quid, but the awful reviews put me right off, even at that price... I'll give it a chance, next time I see it. Even the comments on YouTube, which is usually a nest of vile remarks, are fairly positive... Nothing wrong with a bit of good cheese.

Is it suitable for an eight year old?

No it was quite good. However the producers, who may know how to market Superhero's are lost when it comes to legends from the Pulps of the 30's and 40's. The only one they ever got right was "Conan" and they got that one right only once and by accident. They did a "fair" job with "The Shadow" but have ruined everything else. They have no feel for it. I also think they should've title it "John Carter of Mars" which would've made more sense. But I liked the film anyway.

"Goon" - C+ - I had real low expectations for this one but wound up loving it. Great soundtrack, simple but decent story, engaging actors and a good time.

Watching The Treasure of the Sierra Madre on TCM such a great film.

I did too & High Sierra on TCM.

Both great films though I've always wondered why couldn't the ending have been happier for Bogie in both films.

I know...I know... ( then it wouldn't be considered a great flick & so on ) ... but it's just my 2¢ .

Some library DVDs over the weekend:

Dark Shadows - Wildly uneven and kind of a mess even by Tim Burton standards, but with enjoyable moments, especially if (like me) you were a regular viewer of the original spook opera back in the sixties.

The Master - I felt about this almost exactly the same way I felt about Anderson's last film, There Will Be Blood: Not quite the "Ultimate Story of America!" masterpiece that it was overpraised as, but a pretty interesting and powerful film with some really fine performances.

Friends With Kids - A somewhat smarter-than-average rom-com made more pleasant by its great cast (Adam Scott, Kristin Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris O'Dowd, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Westfeldt).
