Sunday night I caught "Starlift" (1951) on TCM. What a time capsule of 1951!
A pretty lame but still entertaining Hollywood showcase of grade B talent. It featured Doris Day, Ruth Roman, Gordon MacRae, Phil Harris, James Cagney, and a walk on by Louella Parsons, plus a short but fun cameo by Gary Cooper, and another by Jack (Jimmy Olson) Larson. For some reason girl singers in the early 50's seem to have had an irresistable urge to flap their elbows while singing.
A lot of cool early USAF hardware on display, including B-36's, B-29's and a C-97 Boeing Stratocruiser.
Almost the whole flick was filmed with actors in front of rear projection screens of Air Force base backgrounds.
It features a few good production numbers, and a funny bit by Marshall and Noonan (yes, that's Peter Marshall of Hollywood Squares fame).

Stealing Beauty with the beautiful Liv Tyler, Rachel Weisz and Jeremy Irons~ set Set in the Tuscan country side. I've seen it many times as I enjoy Darius Khondji's cinematography- vouyeuristic at the right times. Each character slowly reveals more depth and more longing for something better in life. Even the silence speaks volumes. It's poignant in the fact that all we really want out of ourselves and life is human connection. I highly recommend this film.

HemingwayJones~ if you haven't seen it already, I know you would like it as well being set in Italy of course... where the day's pace seems to be languid and hearty.

Re-watched the crazy movie "Smoking Aces" which is a wild ride where a Vegas entertainer becomes a mafia hood and winds up with mafia kidnappers, paid killers, bounty hunters, and the FBI after him in a Reno hotel.

Alicia Keys is stunning as Georgia one of the killers.

Hoping for a DVD Release...

TCM aired the 1935 William Powell-Ginger Rogers Thin Man-esque mystery Star of Midnight, so I now have yet another beloved Ginger Rogers movie!

Re-watched the crazy movie "Smoking Aces" which is a wild ride where a Vegas entertainer becomes a mafia hood and winds up with mafia kidnappers, paid killers, bounty hunters, and the FBI after him in a Reno hotel.

Alicia Keys is stunning as Georgia one of the killers.

Good film, I to like, enjoy seeing it over again, cool style and to correct you a little, "Smoking Aces" was filmed in South Lake Tahoe Casino/hotel top suites, a bit strange for Keys given her super religious views, still... she is gorgeous, talented babe

Tonight it is "TRUE ROMANCE
This is a superb movie. The interrogation scene between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper is strange but good. Clarence and Alabama are cool, and James Gandolfini makes an appearance as a bad guy henchman.

Bones in a pair Hollywood-waisted pants

Just finished Fear in the Night (1947), with DeForest Kelley in his first starring role. The film reminded me of PRC horror flicks by the way it immediately cuts to the chase and virtually drops the plot on your lap (done in dream flashback). While the film's no minor gem (although based on a Cornell Woolrich story), it was a lark to see Kelley at age 27, in a rather ill-fitting suit, wearing a large-brimmed hat (which accentuated his kind of homely mug), and hearing him spout lines in an often tinny, whiny voice. (It was also a pleasure to see L.A.'s beloved city hall in the closing scenes.) Co-star Paul Kelly (predictably) stole just about every scene he was in, and the female supports (Ann Doran and Kay Scott) had little to do but react to what was happening around them.

Unfolding Florence

A documentary movie on SBS TV about the flamboyant "Florence Broadhurst" an Australian wallpaper designer of the 60's and 70's, and her story beginning in the 1920's as a fashion designer in pre war London. she was murdered, in the late 1970's and to this day no one a has been charged all though may believe it was an "Inside job" Florence Broadhurst lived an amazing life. Not content with reality, she invented and reinvented her past to be even more interesting. Before her brutal murder, she was a fixture on the Sydney social scene, partly because of her flair for self-promotion, partly because of her colourful and flamboyant personality and partly due to her success as wallpaper designer extraordinaire. Yet this is just a small part of the Florence Broadhurst story.

Orphee - starring Jean Marais and directed by Jean Cocteau. Such a brilliant film - magical and so ahead of its time - its hard to believe it was made in 1950.

I flipped on TCM early this morning around 2am and couldn’t believe what I saw.

It was “Blood Feast” starring the one, the only Herschell Gordan Lewis. I had to double check to make sure I was actually watching TCM. I have never, NEVER, seen a film by Lewis on cable, EVER.

I was thrilled because my only copy of this awful movie is on video cassette and so I haven’t watched it in decades.

What made it even more amazing was the fact that they followed it up at 3am with another Lewis classic, “Two Thousand Maniacs”.

Kitchen Sinks and Atomic Briefcases

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960)
Karel Reisz, that sharp-eyed, sympathetic Anglo-Czech director, had a real jewel here with the story of a young machinist (Albert Finney, in his first major film) at the Raleigh works in Nottingham (all filmed on location).
Finney, who has something of the bounce and swagger of young Ben Affleck here, is an immensely likeable rotter who gets his married, older girlfriend pregnant (Rachel Roberts, an arresting Welsh actress I hadn't heard of). The kicker: her husband works alongside him. As they'd say across the pond, he's "for it."

A strangely homey breakfast after a night of illicit-ness.

Seven Days to Noon (1950)
Not-bad low-key thriller concerning a rumpled, conscience-ridden old professor who has invented a doomsday device in a Gladstone bag. He decides that the only way to nip the incipient arms race in the bud is to threaten to blow up London.
The pic is notable for the most orderly evacuation of a great city ever filmed, and a relative lack of heavy-handed politics (if it had been made in the US, every third word in the script would have been Commie or Red).

Missing scientist? He's not missing, he's right in front of yer.

Race Street (1948) George Raft, William Bendix, Marilyn Maxwell, Frank Faylen and Henry Morgan. Raft plays a bookie/night club owner whose pal is bumped off by a syndicate that's muscling in on all the local bookmakers. Classic revenge theme like many of the late forties movies such as Dead Reckoning. Great shots of old San Francisco. This ones worth looking out for when it comes back around on TCM.

It's TCM Underground-they screen cult movies after midnight. A reward for insomniacs, in my opinion!
