"Man of the West", a film I first heard of on a "Western Movie" thread on the Lounge. I rented it and I really liked it. Gary Cooper stars and the overall action was very gritty, somewhat risque but good nonetheless.

After a slow day looking after the local regional museum on Sunday and looking at items from the 1930's all day, when i got home i dragged out a film from the 1930's and watched that...the classic "42nd Street"

Yesterday watched "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and a couple of bad sci-fi flicks. Overall a very enjoyable day. lol

I have this film in my collection, just adore Shirley MacLaine’s looks in this period film, seems to long ago, but You just fall in love with her eyes,
Even her hair style, I wish at times there was a place, a style, bar lounge hotel lobby heck even a “time machine” to return to, visit, no internet, no color TVs, just soft jazz type of music playing, sort of sad.

Any way I love Shirley MacLaine in this film, what a doll, sweet heart, Not a big fan of Fred MacMurray but I like him in the 1930s, 1940'ish films, like Double Indemnity were great, just never did for give him for breaking her sweet heart (sniff, sniff) I just go for these romantic comedies, Billy Wilder did an excellent job. Jack Lemmon is great, but just look at MacLaine she make my heart melt lol too :eusa_clap

From Hell (2001) 6.5/10 I liked this quite a bit, even if Heather Graham is too beautiful to be an 1880s "unfortunate." Ian Holm is one of the world's great actors. They sure used some serious drugs in the 19th Century, didn't they? And the boomers thought that *they* invented drug abuse... I would have liked to have known more about Inspector Abberline, though. I have yet to watch the bonus features on disc 2.

We're having a lot of fun this week showing "Son of Rambow," a sweet little story of two 1980s British schoolboys who decide to make their own VHS sequel to "First Blood," starring themselves in the lead roles. A really good family film -- lots of heart, but not a lot of schmaltz. Very well done!

I had my own mini Cyd tribute. I watched Eastside/Westside. I always thought Cyd and Ava looked a little alike. I also watched Brigadoon. I am not a huge fan of this musical but I like the unexpected dark turns it takes and Cyd and Gene danced beautifully together. I also love the women's costumes.

Sunshine

A rather compelling UK sci-fi film about 8 specialists armed with a bomb on a second attempt to reignite the sun.

It was pretty good. The editing, (especially when they discovered the first probe and boarded it) was a bit odd, but the sets were fantastic.

Definitely worth a second watch. I wonder why this one got swept under the rug.

Last night I watched two films on the television. First up, The Skulls. Not a bad film for some mindless entertainment. I actually like Joshua Jackson - I think of him as a kind of younger George Clooney. I can see him really doing something special if he gets the material.... I'd like to see him in a period piece. One thing that really bugged me, though: the members of the Skulls, a secret society loosely pattern on the Skull and Bones society, spend much of the film in white tie. Alas, while the most of the outfit is spot on, every last one of them appears to be wearing a morning coat (allbeit one with satin lapels). I can only presume that this must have been by deliberate design, but it looked so utterly wrong....

Second, Cabaret. I'd forgotten just how far the film deviated from the stage show (which I much prefer). Still, some very nice period details in the costume department, and the Tomorrow Belongs To Me sequence remains chilling.
