What to wear with a fedora....

I do jeans and fedora all the time.

My suggestion would be to get a nice fur felt as opposed to two wool hats if you're buying new, because that's about what $100 will get you. Better yet, if you know your hat size, there are a lot of nice vintage lids on eBay. I've gotten two really nice vintage Resistols each under $20. In fact, I happen to be wearing a nice 60's Resistol with jeans as I type this!

The most popular answer to your primary question is yes, they're okay for jeans. Of course, back in the day, men wore suits whenever out in public, and were never seen outside without a hat. But times change, and there's no problem wearing a fedora with more casual dress. For instance, my typical attire is a dress shirt and some 501 Levi's (button fly), occasionally with a sport coat, and always with a fedora. If you want to split hairs, some hats are more appropriate for casual vs. dressier settings and clothes. Thin ribbons are most appropriate for jeans and a tee, up to wide ribbons that are best for suits. The Art Fawcett thread has lots of pictures with both styles.

Grey is a neutral color that works for almost anything; warmer greys lean toward warmer colors, and cooler greys the opposite. Silverbelly is also versatile, as is brown. I concur with jlee... Go to a decent hat store (Henry the Hatter is around us), figure out your hat size, maybe buy a beater, then go vintage. It's more worth your money. And always buy fur felt - fur is more durable, and will taper and shrink less than wool.

Brother, there's an entire thread devoted to "hats and hawaiian shirts." If people can pull that off (and boy do they!), there is NO reason you can't pull off the "fedora with jeans" look.

I rarely wear dress pants here on campus for fear of staining them (I'm a messy writer and my favorite pens are fountain pens lol), so I always wear jeans.

I wear fedoras with a lot less than jeans and it looks good (read: appropriate). A lot of it depends on the actual hat, though. Some (read: slightly rumpled) just look better with more casual clothing.

First post for me but I just got into the hat thing and wear mine with jeans and a a tshirt and sometimes a Peacoat. I wear one of my dobbs glenwoods and I think it looks great. The most important thing is what you think. There will always be someone out there with a different opinion

...Wondering if the "typical" Fedora hat is too dressy for jeans? I often do move to a silk shirt (Nat Nast typically) for evenings out, would the shirt, jeans and a hat work in most folk's opinion?

No question that it will work...but may I suggest that it be a thin ribbon fedora? IMO, thin ribbons look more casual and go better with jeans.

I do that all the time I also am wearing boots or shoes. Summer time I am wearing sandals and a Panama with shorts.

I do not when I am wearing sneakers or athletic shoes I usually am wearing another type of head gear or hat.

Thanks Gents, very informative and reassuring. I'll do a bit of shopping, and surely will end up on eBay (I spend way too much time and money there already, what's a little more? ).

I'll also get by Henry the Hatter (maybe tomorrow, heading downtown in the morning), though I already am pretty certain of my hat size. And I do love vintage things (including fountain pens!) and saving money, so eBay sounds like a great source. I also seem predisposed to "collecting", so hats seem like a natural there. Looking forward to picking up a few, I am guessing pictures are welcomed? Will post when I come up with one (or two).

In the meantime, I need to spend more time reading around the site. I know a very few basic brands, but not names of different styles and other terminology. I'll have a bit of a look around!

If memory serves, there is a scene in "The Sting" where Paul Newman is wearing a fedora, wife beater, wool pants and suspenders. If you can wear it with wife beaters, you can wear it with ANYTHING.

I personally do this quite often. I generally wear my fedoras with long-sleeved dress or oxford shirts, though, not short-sleeves (well, my straw hat is the one I would wear). I would say go ahead and do it, it can actually look nice too.
