What to wear over my flightjacket???

Hello guys, I'm looking for a coat to wear over my A-1 flight jacket and would like some suggestions. I'm trying to come up with something that has a bit of character and is warm to, I like the idea of a hood as this would only be used on very cold days (like we had today in Dallas). It should be proportionately big. Here's a picture for inspiration (the guy on the right of course)

And here's one that I like very much, what do ya'll think of it?

Doug, where did you find those sheepskins? I've been looking for one in that style.

BTW, I've got a post war RN issue duffle. Great coat (pardon the pun), but it's a bit too big for me at a size 3 (I think).

And Carebear, while it may have been only 25¬? here at the homestead in Collin County this morning, which you you would probably consider shirtsleeve weather, it's all relative. At least we still have daylight down here! :p

Cheers!

Carebear, you made me laugh at myself when I saw where you were writting from... The temp's not getting to me so much as the freaking wind chill that accompanied it. It almost ripped the car door out of my hand, I kid you not..then it was a struggle to get the thing closed once I was in lol

Baggers, that coat is sold through Hinoya in Japan, I believe it's only like $310 USD right now, which isn't bad..but when I translate the entire page that it's advertised on, I think it may be synthetic or something I can't really tell. Still cool though and I may get it anyway.

Do you have a link? Even if it's synthetic, it may suffice for my purposes. My wife has a synthetic sheepskin made by Barbour. Very convenient to clean, just chuck it into the washing machine. As for the Japanese version, the hurdle will be if they have our sizes. Seems fortune favors the small in stature when ordering from there.

Cheers!!

I've read someplace that early pilots, and that may mean before WWII - I don't know, but that they always wore their leather jackets with larger coats or insulated jump suits over them. I like the idea, and I think it makes good sence with a slimmer cut jacket, layering is always a good idea.

Baggers : here's that link.. looks good to me.

What I can't figure out is - I know the mouton lining is fake but is the outter shell also synthetic? If so it sure looks convencing to me in those pictures.

Ahhh, drat! I didn't run it through a translator, but it looks like they're out of size large in the light color which was the only one that interested me. Of course, it would have depended on what measurement range they call "large." It also would have been nice if it had been a little longer, but I could have lived with it.

Regarding the construction, it wouldn't make much sense to make the pile side out of fake shearling while making the outer from real hide. Just the nature of shearling demands that it be all or nothing since the outer is simply the "flesh" side of the hide. If it's like my wife's Barbour, then the entire jacket is synthetic and it looks quite convincing. As I said earlier, it makes laundering a heck of a lot simpler.

I was just poking fun. :D

Wind chill is a monster. 20 is just fine if you're dressed reasonably well and the air is calm. Wind just cuts right through unless you're layered like the Scott expedition or wearing miracle fabrics.

Tomasso, that's not bad at all. Actually I wouldn't mind a parka like that..but I've always liked duffle coats too. Wish I could find a nice vintage wool one but they seem hard tro come by.

How 'bout something red plaid and Pendleton-like? Now there's vintage!

A sheepskin coat shouldn't be hard to find. Here's one from SanDiego Leather www.leather.com/mens_fashion/fur/marlboro.htm No hood, but look around, I'll bet you can find something.

www.wilsonsleather.com has a "suede faux shearling hipster" jacket in dark and light colors (suede leather with faux shearling pile lining). For $60, why not?

There's a couple of hooded shearling coats much like your Japanese picture from New Zealand at www.nznature.co/nz/mshop/spi//1_skc_3053
I think the "translated" cost in USD is about $900.

RN Duffelcoat

Back in 1985 - celeberating 40 years since WWII ended, a british company Gloverall, who originally made parkacoats for RN had found one roll of cloth from the original WW production. They then produced a limited number of duffelcoats, which were sold for charity.
Guess who has number 495 out of only 750 copies?;) Yours truely.

Lucky you. Back then i really wanted to buy one of those Limited Edition Gloveralls but didn't have the money until it was too late. Lucky you, Spitfire.

I will wear a London Fog trench over the A-2. Sometimes with the zip in lining or sometimes without. Depends on the O.A.T. I always keep my collar snapped on the A-2

When I was back East, I donned my wool Navy Bridge coat over the flight jacket due to the low temps. My jacket is quite formfitting, like a suit jacket, so an overcoat is do able.
