What' the Scoop on (Filson's) Wool Vests?

Thanks, guys. I have a charcoal 24 Oz. Mackinaw on order. I went down to a 40 for a trim fit. I have found if I order a 42 vest (or large) , there is more room than I need, and plenty of room for cold air to find its way in. Also, a size down fits better under the MC jacket.

A snug fit for a vest inside a MC jacket is always best and think that you will be happy with the 24 Oz. Mackinaw. Farm-Ways in Vermont also has a close out sale on their moleskin vests and has one size 40 left. http://www.vermontgear.com/820F.html

I have a Filson Cover Cloth Weekender Coat which I bought at Orvis in San Francisco last year. Tried a lot of sizes and other types, but for some reason this one fit best as an Extra Large, even though I normally take a Large. It fits loose, but very comfortable. Since it's been getting cold, I then bought a Midweight Wool Zip in Jacket Liner. This bulks up the jacket so that it is now rather snug, but boy is it warm! And the wool collar against my neck doesn't itch and feels warm too. Also has sleeves, whereas other zip-ins are just vests. This works well, they have a loop at the end of the sleeve that you affix with the inner sleeve snap connector. Very pleased.

Having a problem trying to post images from Filson's website, or else I'd have done so.

I too have a Filson Cover Cloth Weekender Coat. Like you, I generally wear a large but needed this jacket in extra large. However, I found that a large zip in vest liner works better for me than the extra large and bought a large moleskin zip in vest liner while I was in Seattle in August.

I think you could be right Fanch. Their international shipping costs are stupidly expensive.

A Western Vest is priced at $145, but the shipping would be $130 on top. That is very excessive for such a small, light parcel. I have shipped solid bodied guitars weighing 10 times as much (and with a value 15 times as much) for under $100, including insurance.

UK duty and tax would be around $70, so a grand total of $345 - around £215, for an item that starts out at £90.

Filson, I guess, are not interested in international orders:eeek::eusa_doh:

Visit eBay.com you can pick them up new or used for a good price and the shipping is substantially less. Also if they ship via USPS often times you can inadvertently avoid the added extras. I own a Filson Double Mackinaw and also the Mackinaw vest, I also recently sold a single Mackinaw. Filson products are worth the investment. You could also look at Rokit.co.uk as they sometimes have used (read like new) Filson coats and vests.

Their domestic shipping is high as well. A Mackinaw vest was $16.00 for regular ground shipping. This seems to be a bit much, especially since sellers on eBay offer them new at the same price as Fison, but with free shipping. The next time I go to England, I may take one or two for my UK friends.

Major, the primary rule regarding sizing is not to buy too big unless you are willing to have your vest taken in. My chest is 43" and bought a size 44 that I had to have taken in 1" on each side. A size 42 works fine for me, and I could probably even get by with a size 40. However, I am shaped more or less like a stick, and if one is shaped like an apple:essen:, alternative sizing might apply.

The Western Vest is listed as S,M,L etc, rather than numbered sizes.

The "fit notes" describe S as 38, M as 40-42, and L as 44. And described as "generously sized"....
My chest measurement is just about 43. So you reckon the M would be the right fit?

I have never tried on the Western vest but think that you could not go wrong with a Filson vest that is a size 42. You would probably be OK with a M but keep in mind that a L might also work too and can be taken in if too large. Can always make the vest smaller but not larger!

I have a Woolrich wool vest with a zip front and cargo pockets that is very nice!

Check this one out - a really nice wool vest, comes in 3 patterns!

I've got the western vest in XL and am normally a 44" in suit jacket sizing and this fits me just right, if thats a help.
I wouldn't describe it as over sized personally.

I found the chepest way to buy one in the UK was to buy from one of Filsons authorised sellers websites, rather than their own, due to the high p&p as noted.

You could also look at these wool vests at ASOS currently on sale at £13.50. They appear to be based on the Filson Mackinaw vest available in green or blue, 78% wool. Some member here has bought one, when I remember who I'll post a link to his review. See here

I got this Schaeffer Garrison for Christmas. It is an XL. I am closer to 42-44 but their Large in other vests at touch too snug.
I like also to wear a hoodie or fleece under the vest. How do you think a Large Filson western vest will do for 42-44 Sam?

I can wear some sports coats in a size 44 and an XL Filson western vest fits me as snuggly as I'd want anything to fit. Any tighter and it wouldn't work. An XL would probably fit you fine if you don't mind having a bit of room in it. For a tighter fit an L would probably work (keep in mind that I have no experience with anything other than the XL size).

One of the nice things about living in Western Wa is that Filson is just a ferry ride away. For a small premium they will measure you up and give you the perfect fit. I think their sizing hasn't changed in many years (decades) and we are bigger then we used to be. I think it also is a manly thing, when they started out everyone wanted to be a big guy, so they ran their sizes small to let someone who should be in a medium wear a large.

Got my Filson Mackinaw wool vest in Charcoal today. I have a 42" chest, but ordered a size 40 so it would fit tighter to the body for layering under a MC jacket. Perfect fit. I like a vest to fit close to the body for warmth and layering. It is 24 oz. 100% wool, relatively thin and dense, and should be a warm vest. Sort of like wearing a lightweight peacoat for a vest. Won't find out today how warm it is as we have been in an early Spring for the few weeks. It got down in the 20s once a while back, and I thought Winter was finally on the way, but no such luck.

I just received my Filson Mackinaw wool vest in Brown earlier this week. Since Peacoat and I are close to the same size, I could also have gone with a size 40 for a very snug fit but went with a 42 instead. If I start riding again, I will get one in a size 40. It works great for layering underneath my Vintage Black FQHH HWM that I received a month or so ago. My HWM is still a bit stiff but gradually softening with use.
